Alleged CAD renders of the AirPods Pro 2 charging case appeared online Friday, revealing some changes potentially coming to Apple’s noise-canceling earbuds. They show an opening for a lanyard attachment as well as speaker holes that could make misplaced AirPods Pro easier to locate.
Apple might announce the second-gen AirPods Pro alongside the iPhone 14 at its Far Out event on September 7.
Could the AirPods Pro 2’s charging case look like this?
Andrew O’Hara shared the CAD renders on Twitter, though he said he could not vouch for their authenticity.
Previous rumors surrounding the AirPods Pro 2 claimed the charging case might gain Find My support. That would allow users to track them using the Find My app on their iPhone, even when the AirPods are not inside the case. The renders show the speaker holes at the bottom, while the lanyard attachment cutout is on the right side.
In the new CAD renders, the charging port remains on the bottom of the case. However, it is difficult to make out if it is a Lightning port or a USB-C connector. Apple reportedly will go all in on USB-C across its product lineup in the near future, but it is unclear if this transition will start with the AirPods Pro 2.
AirPods Pro 2 could deliver superior sound quality
The second-gen AirPods Pro 2 might feature a sleeker design and provide superior sound quality. It may even support high-quality lossless audio. The earbuds’ active noise cancellation also should get some much-needed improvements.
Previous rumors indicated the earbuds would act as a heart monitor and hearing aid, but recent reports indicate that’s unlikely to happen. Battery life should remain the same or improve slightly.
Apple announced the original AirPods Pro in late 2019. The product has been on the market for nearly three years and is long overdue for a refresh. Apple silently updated the AirPods Pro last October to add MagSafe charging support.
