Sat, September 3, 2022, 6:11 AM

Yahoo Finance's Seana Smith delivers a special report on Clockwork nail robots that provide 10-minute manicures and are being piloted in several Target stores.

Video Transcript

SEANA SMITH: People are always trying to find ways to save time, whether it's getting their groceries delivered or having a robot vacuum their floors. Well, get this. There is a new machine out there from robotics company Clockwork that slashes the time it takes to get your nails done by more than just half. We had to check it out. So let's take a look.

Getting your nails done takes a lot of time. Get this. The average person spends 3,120 minutes a year on their nails. But robotics company Clockwork has got a solution for you. They say they will have you out the door in just 10 minutes with their robot manicure machine with a goal to revolutionize the $6 and 1/2 billion nail industry.

Now these robots are in select locations across the country, including six Target stores, giving customers there the option to sign up for $10 manicures. And it could be a big win for Target, too. Focusing on the customer experience is what's going to separate the winners and the losers. It's the future of retail.

GERALD STORCH: The more fun that's added to store environment, the better it is. And so I applaud Target for doing it.

SEANA SMITH: And Clockwork co-founder and CEO Renuka Apte says that we are still in the early stages. Requests for this machine are coming from countries all over the world.

RENUKA APTE: Most of the contracts we are signing today are actually for 2023 because we're backed up that much with the demand that we've got. Pushing tens of thousands of partnership requests at this point.

SEANA SMITH: So with all the buzz around these machines, we had to check it out for ourselves. We went to the iconic 30 Rockefeller Plaza, where real estate giant Tishman Speyer leases a robot as an amenity in the building. We had a little fun with it, making those very tough decisions like picking out a color. Let's go with red and play it safe. One hand down, one to go. So what's our verdict? Wow. It looks good. I'm not a nail expert, but this thing works well.

I mean, not a nail expert, Rachelle, but I was just blown away by the fact it only took 10 minutes. And it looked really, really, really good.

RACHELLE AKUFFO: They looked really great. When you think of the amount of time you can spend when you go to a nail shop, this is fantastic. I love the fact that it's quick. I love to get my nails done. They always stay done. So I would definitely do this. I love it.
