Just got my brand new Macbook Air M2 in Midnight blue. What an awesome computer. I'm upgrading from a MBA Intel i5. The keyboard is astounding. The screen, just perfect. The keyboard? An absolute joy to type on. I am so in love with this computer.

Except one thing......My god, the fingerprints! I read a lot about this as I waited the nearly 4 weeks for my order to come in. I was worried and determined to not be so sensative to any finger prints I might see. But good lord, after just 2 days my laptop looks like it was handle by a guy who worked 8 hours behind a deep fryer. Fingerprints everywhere on this thing! Very very unsightly. And I am a habitual hand washer, so am quite a clean person. At least I thought I was. Now I might have to switch brands of soap.

I'm very surprised that Apple let a computer like this out the door. There must be a better way to make a color like this. This looks like a poorly thought out idea. When people talk about fingerprints on this color laptop, believe it!

I'm really on the fence with keeping this laptop. I equipped it very well, wanting to keep it for the next 5-7 years at least (24gb RAM 1 TB hard drive).

Arrrghhh!

Please use the computer for what it was designed for haha! The fingerprints are meaningless and I argued this point on my own thread about people retuning a perfectly fine machine over fingerprints. I guarantee once the honeymoon phase is over you won’t give a damn bout those fingerprints and your keyboard will have Dorito shrapnel inside.

Try it out for the 14 days and see how you feel a week in, you may find it doesn't really bother you when you settle in with it because it's not new out of the box

Personally, this would drive me mad as I like my devices looking pristine (while I use them for their intended purpose), and so I think another colour would suit me better

Fingerprints never bothered me so far. For me it’s how easily it will show marks on it

I'm sure they will use the computer for what it was designed for, however I don't believe the fingerprints are meaningless - and I think it's a personal choice whether or not people want to live with it.

For example - some people choose to live in clean houses and some people choose to live in houses with stuff lying all over the place, some people have spotless cars which get washed every other week and polished frequently and some people leave junk lying in their cars, some people like bright colours and some people like dark colours, some people use clamshell mode and some people don't.... I could go on and on to illustrate my point.

If you're happy with fingerprints and can live with them fine - but commenting "Please use the computer for what it was designed for" is a moot point

I chose the Space Gray for precisely this reason as I am very fussy about dirt or smudges on my computer body or screen. A friend of mine chose Midnight and it looks so messy most of the time. Mine is not perfect but compared to the Midnight it is night and day (ha...). Space Gray is a little boring but it looks very good and I do not have to clean it all the time. Funnily enough I have MS Surface Laptop 4 in matte black and that is much better than the Midnight on the MBA for some reason. Even after a lot of handling that looks fine. So there are obviously solutions out there for dark paint finishes but Apple's Midnight does not appear to be it.

I use the toilet for what it was designed for, and needless to say it's not pretty. But according to him I don't have to worry about it or clean it so that's a relief.

Yeah, because comparing using the toilet and using a perfectly fine macbook and returning it for fingerprints are the same thing……
My house is immaculate because I want it to be, having a clean macbook doesn’t interest me because it’s a tool to be used for a job, aesthetics mean nothing.
People who return a MacBook over fingerprints are just not on this planet seriously

Using your argument, people returning macbooks over fingerprints is like going back to the dealer saying they want their money back because their car door handles have fingerprints on. It’s pathetic and the sooner Apple denies customers the right to return perfectly acceptable products because of pathetic reasoning the better

Fingerprints never bothered me before either. I've had various MacBook Pro's and Air's and this new Midnight Blue M2 is easily 10-20 times worse in this one area. It's shocking how awful the case looks after a single day. I try to avoid touching the computer as much as possible, and I'm not one to think of trivial things like this, at all.

I have to see the Starlight color in person. From pictures I can't tell what color it is. Not sure how it handles fingerprints.

I had a Rose Gold MacBook that I just loved. Otherwise I'd go with boring silver. I've had loads of silver laptops and never thought about fingerprints at all.

The one point no one in my OP that no one has commented on is, why does the Midnight Blue color have to be such a fingerprint magnet? Are the prints there on other machines, just not visible?

Couldn't there be some sort of coating that dealt with this problem better? I don't know. Just curious as to whether or not this is the best it can be.

Meh, comes with owning a dark laptop. We have a black Razer blade 15 here that does the same and that’s after Razer apparently added a coating to reduce it. Doesn’t look any different than my midnight lol

Get a case to protect it? I always use one avoids scratches. Jokes on me though, the case I got gets fingerprints, doh

Lol I know right! I laugh at those who’s solution to fingerprints is a clear case which is a fingerprint magnet in itself! Just have to accept it’s going to have them

I was fine with that, what I don’t like is how easy it’s going to show every little mark on it. I have a silver one coming in, we’ll see if I like it over my current midnight

I was in store and saw the floor model, I heard so much about fingerprints, yet it didn't seem bad. I'll find out, picking one up on Monday.

Saw the midnight blue at the shop, and the first thing i checked was the fingerprints… yes you can see them, but its not as extreme as some people describe here…
Same goes with the base model, it felt fast and snappy, and for the average Joe it will be more then enough…

Using a device that constantly shows fingerprints and annoys you, doesn’t really make you feel good about a $1.5k-$2k purchase, does it? If you’re not happy with your “investment” and are able to exchange it, why not do so and get something that makes you happy?

They know it’s a premium product at a very premium price tag

Apple has a budget for returns, refurbishes and sells them for a bit less than new. Apple knows because of the 14 day return policy , people will take a risk on products that people might otherwise not buy, but likely keep or exchange for another one of their devices. Seems like a win win overall, doesn’t it?

You aren’t happy with it and I believe you won’t get over the fact midnight blue is a fingerprint galore. Do yourself a favor and return it. I know I did. Happy with silver now.

I saw one of these in-person at a computer store last week and, yeah, properly disgusting with smudges all over. It looked like a CSI team had come through and prepped the unit for the fingerprints team. It's a pity Apple rarely gets colors right without some kind of caveat.

Take some fine grain sandpaper and lightly rough up the finish. Texture helps hide fingerprints
