Listed: everywhere Aussies can hire electric cars to enjoy a fossil fuel free holiday drive

Hertz Australia has just made available lots of Polestar 2’s but they’re not the only Australian hire car company that has electric vehicles (EV) available.

The following details which car rental companies in Australia offer electric cars as well as the brands and models they offer:

SIXT has 5 models: MG ZS EV, the Tesla Model 3, the Hyundai Ioniq EV, BMW IX3 and the Hyundai Kona EV. This is a nice mixture of sedans (Tesla Model 3 and Hyundai Ioniq EV) and SUV’s (MG ZS EV, Hyundai Kona EV, BMW IX3).

SIXT electric car hire customers:

  • Are given a full tutorial before leaving the branch and can return their vehicle without full charge
  • Can use Chargefox (the largest fast charger network in Australia) for free
  • Receive NRMA roadside assistance with all rentals

The roadside assist and free charging offers are because SIXT is owned by NRMA which also owns Chargefox.

Currently Sixt hires electric cars from 5 airport locations: Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane and Perth.

Hertz

Hertz has the Polestar 2 and some Tesla Model 3‘s. These are medium size cars. The Polestar 2 is a hatchback and Tesla model 3 is a sedan.

Hertz electric car hire customers:

  • Are given a full tutorial before leaving the branch and can return their vehicle without full charge
  • Can use Chargefox and Evie chargers for free until mid November 2022 (confirm specifics with Hertz if you’re hiring around that date)

Currently Hertz hires electric cars from 8 locations: Adelaide, Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Hobart, and Launceston. Polestar 2’s are available at all these locations and Tesla model 3’s only in Adelaide and Canberra.

Europcar

Europcar currently hires out only 1 model of EV but on the plus side the MG ZS EV SUV is one of the more affordable electric cars in Australia

This is handy if you’re looking to do an extended test drive before potentially putting in an order for it.

Unfortunately Europcar only hires them out in Victoria (Melbourne Airport, Melbourne City & Avalon Airport) so it’s only a handy option if you live near Melbourne or are planning a holiday starting and ending there.

Despite being a major car hire brand Avis Australia has no electric cars available at present.

There is one more way to hire an electric car in Australia but it’s not one of the traditional companies so check their terms and conditions carefully before hiring a car.

Evee is an all electric car sharing platform (mostly different Tesla models) that allows drivers like you to rent EVs directly from people who own them.

At the moment there are cars available in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane, Gold Coast and more but note there are only a handful of cars available in the non capital city locations.
