Microsoft Releases Windows 11 Cumulative Update KB5016629

Microsoft has just released the August 2022 Patch Tuesday update for Windows 11. It comes as KB5016629, and it can be downloaded via the typical channels, including Windows Update, WSUS, and the Microsoft Update Catalog.

Windows 11 cumulative update KB5016629 is obviously focused on security improvements, and this isn’t by any means a surprise given it lands on Patch Tuesday.

But at the same time, it also resolves a glitch that affects the Start menu, with Microsoft explaining the following in the official release notes:

“Addresses a known issue that might prevent some of you from opening the Start menu. On the affected devices, clicking or tapping the Start button or using the Windows keyboard shortcut might have no effect.”

The known issues

When it comes to the issues that have already been acknowledged in this release, there are two of them.

The first affects the IE mode tabs in Microsoft Edge, which could stop responding when a site displays a modal dialog box. This bug has already been addressed with the help of a KIR.

The second hits the XPS Viewer, and in this case, Microsoft says it’s already working on a fix, and it should be released in an upcoming update.

“After installing this update, XPS Viewer might be unable to open XML Paper Specification (XPS) documents in some non-English languages, including some Japanese and Chinese character encodings,” the company says.

“This issue affects both XML Paper Specification (XPS) and Open XML Paper Specification (OXPS) files. When encountering this issue, you may receive an error, "This page cannot be displayed" within XPS Viewer or it might stop responding and have high CPU usage with continually increasing memory usage. When the error is encountered, if XPS Viewer is not closed it might reach up to 2.5GB of memory usage before closing unexpectedly.”
