The first time I heard about Tahiti and Bora Bora was when HP was developing x86 blades servers, but those were project names. I thought at the time these places must be exotic that someone like Kirk Bresniker would use to name the projects😀. I was determined to visit these places then. But it is until now that I finally did it! One interesting factorial about those blades was that HP paid the IBV to remove the ACPI suppprt initially not knowing what it is. HP ended up paying the IBV to restore ACPI. 😎That has engraved in my mind forever! I learned a few words here: Ia Orana, Maururu, Nana….

As cars become more connected, intelligent and autonomous, software is playing an increasingly central role in this evolution. According to a recent research by Goldman Sachs, OEMs are investing significantly in software targeting US$20B+ of obtainable software revenue by decade end. With that trend they estimate that the dollar content of software will rise from US$202/car to US$4.957 by end of 2030.
Further, the decoupling of hardware and software means that many features will be defined by software rather than specialized hardware as before, giving rise 1/ to the software defined vehicle, and 2/ to a new software ecosystem. OEMs have long admired the innovation speed and cost efficiency in the high-tech world, as well as in the consumer electronics, in particular - but not limited to - in the area of smart phones or hybrid data centers. The success of these industries builds on multiple factors. Probably the most relevant ones for Automotive are, first, rigorous re-use of what is available already in the industry – embrace and expand. Re-use makes you run faster. It gives you a much higher quality level to offset, as that software has already been proven in many use cases. Second, instant belief that partnerships are instrumental to succeed in a highly competitive world. Concentrate on what you can do best, what differentiates you, and invest into, yes hone core, strategic partnerships for the rest. This gives you access to a richer set of knowhow, expands channels, and accelerates innovation.

What a great day here at the University of Cambridge with auto industry leaders like Herbert Diess of Volkswagen AG to discuss the future of the European automotive market. Together with Richard Grisenthwaite, SVP, Chief Architect & Fellow at Arm we had some interesting conversations on everything from the software-defined vehicle to autonomous cars. The automotive market is at an exciting inflection point and days like these make me proud that Arm will be at the centre of its evolution! Looking forward to the road ahead #onArm.
