Introduction

SAP is a leading provider of cloud computing, enterprise mobility, and analytics to government and non-profit agencies worldwide. The SAP for Public Sector innovative solution portfolio to improve government performance, services, and accountability to improve people’s lives.

Use of SAP in the Australian Public Sector

SAP has different solutions for the public sector that help to provide quick and efficient services for the public. These solutions optimise the government support to the public in different areas including health, procurement and social services. The aim of SAP S/4 HANA platform is to deliver a standard way for automating transactional corporate services with shared investments in enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems through their Hubs.

As Covid caused its financial impact throughout the world, the Australian government planned to increase its incentives for a large organisations to increase spending. While the SAP projects had already gained significance prior to Covid, the Australian government projects have given a further push to SAP initiatives such as GovERP and NSW government shift to the ‘Whole of Government’ SAP idea.

Government Enterprise Resource Planning (GovERP) is used by the Australian government to deliver services including reporting, finance, procurement and human resource. The Services Australia was allocated money in the 2021-22 budget for the development of GovERP. They are expected to incorporate GovERP across the Australian government’s six services share Hubs and substitute the already deployed SAP EPR systems that are supposed to expire in 2025. In December 2020, the Australian government asked for an expression of interest for the implementation of GovERP and the company EY was allocated a contract for $14.5 million. Until June 2023, EY is expected to provide the design, development, architecture and release management of the GovERP system

In the case of social services, SAP supports governments like Australia with financial management by providing a system that receives accurate information on time and provides services by considering the expenses and available resources. Moreover, SAP supports the government with resource management by enabling the usage of existing information and capturing new information to make intelligent decisions about customers and service providers.

Services like SAP Supplier Relationship Management (SRM) are being used in countries like Australia to support procurement procedures in companies for improved supplier relationship management. It is an application to automate the procure-to-pay processes leading to increased savings, reduction of costs and improved management of supplies.

The SAP business process for organisation management allows providing Australian government centralised as well as decentralised services for the management of corporate services like health, real estate and finance. Having a decentralised system provides support against a single point of failure in case of a cyber-attack or a natural disaster. Moreover, tools for applying insights into financial data sets can help in making smart decisions and automating certain processes for financial services.

For support with the tax and management processes, SAP is used by the government for tax management that enables viewing taxpayer information in a single place. This not only increases revenues by also assists with making sure that everyone complies with the tax regulations. For taxpayers, it supports them by having the option to register in multiple ways. For example, a taxpayer can register using a phone, email, or web. Moreover, they can use services for keeping their accounts up to date by filing new details.
