Europe could ban Facebook and Instagram within a month
Could Facebook and Instagram totally disappear from European territory? The question arises, following the shock measure undertaken by Ireland. The country has just blocked the transfer of data from its country to the United States; and is asking its neighbors to do the same. Without an agreement in the coming weeks, Meta’s social networks could therefore get a ban in the continent.
We believe that Ireland has a grudge against Facebook. Barely months after imposing a fine of 17 million euros on the social network; the country has just announced a measure which could well completely redistribute the cards of power on the European continent. Indeed, if the European Union is particularly concerned about the protection of the data of its inhabitants, Ireland clearly takes this thing seriously.
Europe is currently considering banning Facebook and Instagram
Yesterday, July 7, the Data Protection Commission took the unprecedented decision; to block any transfer of data between Europe and the United States. But it does not stop there, since the Commission has sent the document in question to all the neighboring countries, including France. All the European data protection institutions thus have one month to issue their opinion on the matter. After this time, Facebook and Instagram will be banned from the territory.
The disagreement between Meta and the European authorities is not new. Already in 2020, Mark Zuckerberg’s group was already threatening to withdraw its services from the continent following a similar decision from Ireland. But the risk does exist this time, with the involvement of the rest of the countries of the European Union.
According to a new report from Politico, the firm wants to be resolutely conciliatory: “This provisional decision, which must be submitted for review by European personal data protection authorities, is linked to a conflict between European law and American law which is in the process of being resolved”, explains the latter. “We welcome the agreement between the United States and the European Union establishing a new legal framework that will allow data transfers across borders”.
