With the second iOS 16 beta, Apple is expanding the built-in "Report Junk" feature in the Messages app to cover SMS/MMS messages, allowing spam messages to be reported to select carriers in the United States.
If you long press on an SMS/MMS message in the Unknown Senders section of the Messages app in iOS 16, you can select the "Report Junk" option. Using this option lets you report a message as junk, sending it to Apple and Verizon and deleting the message.
"Report Junk" was previously available for iMessage, with junk iMessages able to be reported to Apple, but the new option also covers SMS/MMS messages and makes it easier to report spam directly to carriers.

Do we know which carriers have this? It would be great to at least mention which of the big carriers have this

I am still shocked that this is even a thing every time I get a prepaid SIM card abroad. I legit have never received a spam or service text in Germany. As soon as I activate my Mexican sim it’s DING DING DING. EVERY DAY. When I was in Miami, I kept getting calls from Cuba too 😅

Just took advantage of it! Carrier is Verizon, iOS 16 beta 2 - reported an SMS as junk immediately.
That’ll be good. I already make it a point to report junk SMSs through my provider’s reporting mechanism, but it can be a pain to forward the message and type out the number. It’s even worse when the spam SMS came through the carrier’s email to SMS gateway.
AT&T did recently simplify the process some if it came in via said gateway, but it’s not nearly as easy as this, since it’s a one button press, and it’s a button that’s already there. So I’m genuinely excited about this.

Apple needs to hide whether a number is part of iMessage until after a user replies or blocks and reports it as junk.
I can type in a phone number and it turns blue right away before I send it.

About time. I had filed a request for this feature.
I wish this could be done via a swipe left from the message list without having to open the message.

All I really wanted to see out of this year's WWDC was some attention paid to the Phone app. It's embarrassing now how far they are lagging behind Google in terms of junk call protection.
Really need something more effective than "silence unknown callers" which I have to leave on all the time, because despite there being a plugin for it, I've never seen any of the carrier apps that claim to block junk calls, ever even once block or even show caller ID for an unknown number.

I typically report it to my carrier, I figure that they’ve got systems for controlling spam SMSs that go over their network the same way email providers have control over the email coming into their network. So, while reporting it to the FTC might help investigations, reporting it to the carrier might get those messages to stop. I also like to use VeroSMS to filter out messages, but my phone likes to offload the app (because I rarely need to open it), then I suddenly start getting more spam SMS messages.Sounds a lot easier than having to forward the text to 7726 (SPAM) like I've been doing: https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/how-recognize-and-report-spam-text-messages#report

It's not just the US. I reported a text message as spam today and I'm in the UK. My network is Three, which barely works at the best of times so colour me surprised that they allow this feature.

You might see if your carrier has a junk call protection app on the App Store. I’m an AT&T user, and I find their Call Protect app to be at least mildly helpful. All I really wanted to see out of this year's WWDC was some attention paid to the Phone app. It's embarrassing now how far they are lagging behind Google in terms of junk call protection.

This will be welcome. I didn't know spam/junk texts were this prevalent until I left TMO to ATT. Now I'm thinking TMO was really good at saving me from spam.

Apple should take it further and create a ML-based spam/scam detection for iMessage, SMS/MMS, email, Calendar subscriptions, VPN profile, voice calls, and FaceTime calls.

Both the supply side (spammers) and the demand side (people who spend money on whatever spammers are flacking) depress me.

Why not simply add an option to block messages or phone calls from hidden or unknown numbers? Almost all mobile phone OS‘s from early y2k had this.

That would mean an aggregation of all the messages being received by all iPhone users, and capturing patterns from that. This is one of those things that Google is absolutely best suited for as aggregating user data is what the exist to do. This (and other things) are in those areas that Apple COULD do if they were ok with querying and aggregating user data.Apple should take it further and create a ML-based spam/scam detection for iMessage, SMS/MMS, email, Calendar subscriptions, VPN profile, voice calls, and FaceTime calls.
The best they could do would be to perform on-device analysis which, of course, doesn’t allow protection from messages that others have gotten that a particular user hasn’t gotten yet.

Now give us RCS for iMessage so life for talking to my green text friends isn't a chore.
