Latest Windows 10 preview build comes with fix

The fix will soon ship to all Windows versions

Microsoft is moving a step closer to the public release of a Windows fix that resolves the bug introduced in January and causing the recovery discovery discs created using the Backup and Restore feature bundled with the OS to no longer start.

The issue was caused by the January 2022 cumulative updates on all supported versions of Windows, with Microsoft explaining that third-party products weren’t affected, and all users could switch to them until a fix goes live.

“After installing the Windows updates released January 11, 2022 or later Windows versions on an affected version of Windows, recovery discs (CD or DVD) created by using the Backup and Restore (Windows 7) app in Control Panel might be unable to start,” Microsoft said at that point.

“Recovery discs that were created by using the Backup and Restore (Windows 7) app on devices which have installed Windows updates released before January 11, 2022 are not affected by this issue and should start as expected.”

After previously testing a fix earlier this month, Microsoft has now included the patch in the most recent Windows 10 preview build that the company has just shipped to users who are enrolled in the Windows Insider program in the Release Preview channel.

“We fixed a known issue that might prevent recovery discs (CD or DVD) from starting if you created them using the Backup and Restore (Windows 7) app in Control Panel. This issue occurs after installing Windows updates released January 11, 2022 or later,” the software giant notes in the release notes of this latest build.

If everything goes according to the plan and Microsoft doesn’t discover a new bug in the most recent updates, the fix should go live for all production devices, regardless of the Windows version they run, as part of the June 2022 Patch Tuesday cycle.
