Couchbase vs RavenDB: Performance at Rakuten Kobo

Rakuten Kobo needed to select a database to manage their eBook application (containing millions of products with tens of millions of users and in a state of continuous scale out). A test case was created to task both databases with ingesting over 1.3 billion documents as fast as they could while provisioning as little resources as possible.

This whitepaper covers the requirements, the tests, and the results.
(Spoiler: RavenDB outperformed Couchbase. Significantly.)

Whitepaper Cover

The two databases were measured on how many requests per second they could process and how fast they could process them. To test the durability of the databases, load spikes were included to see if they could maintain performance and continue working. A node was also disabled to see how efficiently each database restored to full capacity at the least inconvenience to the users.

In this report, you will see:

  • How quickly each database ingested the data
  • How each database performed faster standard and heavy loads
  • The resources each database needed to accomplish its task
  • The storage space and money Rakuten saved once they made their decision
