暗网市场丝绸之路的创始人 Ross Ulbricht 因尝试雇佣杀手杀死勒索他的人而最终被法庭判处终身监禁，不得保释。他还被要求支付 1.83 亿美元的赔偿金，这一金额是使用当时的交易兑换率根据丝绸之路非法销售总额计算出来的。2020 年美国司法部从一名黑客手中扣押了窃取自丝绸之路的 69,370 枚比特币。未透露名字的黑客在 2013 年 4 月将这些比特币转移到私人钱包。司法部和 Ross Ulbricht 达成协议，放弃对被盗比特币的任何要求，换取比特币出售之后还清赔偿金。这批比特币价值 30 亿美元。
