Netflix loses subscribers for the first time in over a decade, share price falls 20%

In its earnings report for the first quarter of 2022, Netflix informed shareholders that it has lost 200,000 subscribers in this period. This is the first time in over a decade that the streaming platform has lost subscribers.

The primary reasons for this negative trend include households canceling subscriptions to save money as streaming costs continuously increase, as well as the company's exit from Russia. Netflix has cautioned shareholders that subscriber counts may continue to drop but it plans to counter this problem soon by cracking down on password sharing. It estimates that over 100 million households are guilty of breaking its password sharing regulations and as such, stricter action will be taken in this area. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings is quoted as saying:

When we were growing fast, it wasn't a high priority to work on [account sharing]. And now we're working super hard on it.

Our relatively high household penetration - when including the large number of households sharing accounts - combined with competition, is creating revenue growth headwinds.

Netflix says that it lost 600,000 subscribers after exiting Russia and 700,000 other subscribers in U.S. and Canada quit after its latest price hike. It expects to lose two million more subscribers in the next quarter. Despite these apparent setbacks, Netflix continues to be the market leader in this space with over 220 million subscribers and says that these results are in line with its expectations and should yield higher revenue down the line.

Its revenue was up by 9.8% at $7.8 billion compared to the same period last year, but growth has slowed down considerably and profits are down by 6%. The latest quarterly earnings also resulted in the company's share price tanking by a significant 20% in after-hours trading.

Netflix has been trying to attract new subscribers and retain existing ones in multiple ways. It launched a gaming service at no extra cost last year and is now also exploring an ad-supported tier at a lower price point, even though its management had been strongly against this idea up until last month.

I wonder how many people who share passwords do it for similar reasons to me. My Netflix is shared with my elderly and terminal mother and a nephew who rarely uses it. I personally rarely use it myself but I'm paying for the top tier subscription.

If Netflix clamp down on me then they will lose a premium tier subscriber as I certainly wouldn't pay for it just for myself and there is no way my mother or nephew will subscribe.

Netflix may not gain as many of new subscribers as they believe and they will also lose some subscriptions.

I think this + raising prices turned people off. I'm personally so tired of streaming services feeling like cable that I just use plex. I'm not paying for a service per tv show.

That's what a like about music streaming. You pay monthly and u get to listen to whatever you want

Up until this latest price increase, I was the same. I moved down a notch due to them raising prices so many times in the last few years. I have my account set up at my elderly mothers house and I'm 100% positive she doesn't remember how to use it. She's figured out Disney+ only because she's a Star Wars fanatic.

I suspect they'll use this "losing subscribers" as an excuse to raise prices again. If they do, I'm going to switch to the "only subscribe the month something drops that I want to see" plan like half the people I know.

I'm wondering what they're going to do to prevent it. They already restrict above a certain amount of simultaneous connections (2, I think).

If I'm traveling for work and watching Netflix at night, and my wife is watching it at home, they sure as hell better not block one of us. That would be a good enough reason for me to get rid of my subscription.

I've read that they may introduce a confirmation text/email any time your account is accessed from an ip address other that the nominated account address.

In my case that would mean is every time my mother or nephew attempt to use Netflix I would receive a text/email and would need to contact them with the verification code.

That wouldn't stop account sharing but it would alert users to anyone using their account and also be a major pain in the butt for the official account holder.

Yikes. That'll be a good way to tick off a big portion of their subscribers.

Sure would. I think Netflix would be far better off to introduce different subscription tiers to cater for account sharing.

I've read they are thinking of going down that road first but imo they are hampered by the fact they are already the most expensive streaming site so I'm not sure how much wriggle room they have to play with.

Definitely agreed on the tiers route rather than trying to restrict their user-base. None of the other services are working that hard to restrict people, so it's just a bad look for them.

Having a cheaper tier with ads makes sense. Hulu does a decent job with that and I think plenty of people will tolerate it for a reduced price.

I'm thinking that, if Netflix clamps down on this, a lot of those subscribers could unsubscribe because I suspect many of them are only using the service because it's shared but likely don't care much if they cancel the subscription.

This could backfire on Netflix in two areas, one is there is less likely new users will want to subscribe to the services and two, a lot might cancel the subscription they've got, especially now with cost of living going up and summer kicking in, these are usually the first kinds of services to go once money is tight.

They really can't do this. Think of mobile users. Their ips are -constantly- changing.

Heck, I have T-Mobile 5G home internet. My security software for my mail servers at work keep letting me know that my home ip can change several times a day. Even though the router doesn't move, I'm apparently similar signal strength between several towers and it hops if certain large vehicles happen to be coming along the road that's right next to my house blocking the tower that normally wins out.

They are already trialling this. Friends in Australia are getting OTP when they are sharing the account with other friends.

What's weird is that many people argue $10/mo is expensive, but given how much music and podcasts I listen to compared to the 2-3 hours of Netflix a week? My money is much better spent on Spotify or Apple Music.

That being said, I'm pretty close to cutting off my Netflix subscription too. Literally the only reason I haven't is due to family, and if they decide to put pressure on those with family plans, I'm out.

Ultimately, there's no way to differentiate an authentic use versus a sharing use.

Let’s say I’m watching Netflix on my lunch break on a work computer or my phone. There’s no way to know whether it’s me or a friend doing it. IP address doesn’t work, MAC address doesn’t work, geolocation doesn’t work, 2FA doesn’t work, registered device, etc. None of those will determine whether it’s me or a friend. Any of these techniques will just make it a bit harder to share but you would still be able to share. At work, we use a phone system that tags the computer because the phone system wants to discourage using the same user license at multiple locations. But our staff needs to move from computer to computer and be able to use the same account. so it has 2FA set at one minute. You go to another computer and try to log in, it sends a text message. You have 1 minute to enter that text message. Annoying. But it's not going to make us run out to buy 40 more licenses.

In any case, this is a ruse by the CEO. Typical gaslighting. They already know it’s not a lot of account sharing because there are limited simultaneous streams per account. This is just to dissuade shareholders from divesting and to persuade prospective investors that there is still room for growth. The smarter investors are already running because they know the truth. There's only so many available people who want to subscribe for your product and Netflix has maxed it out at their price points. Even if you get the few account sharing abusers to subscribe, it won't result in significant growth and growth is what investors care about (because what is the point of buying a company's stock if it doesn't appreciate significantly; profit helps the company but it doesn't really help the stockholder much).

Exactly. But another problem is that with Netflix, not all shows are available in one region. Music has it's region restrictions too, but not as bad as Netflix and you can just upload a custom track.

Paying my heating bills or paying a subscription to watch men getting pregnant. 🤔 Tough choice.

Weird, I have a Netflix account never have to watch men get pregnant or is that what you are into?

Yeah, you have to wonder what these people are watching if the algorithm is throwing up those types of suggestions to them.

What show is this?

Dammit, you made me think Junior was on Netflix.

1 penny more and I am canceling. It is not worth 20 a month.

I have Hulu, Disney+, Paramount+, and Prime. Nothing to keep me interested that is why I subscribe to all of them. If I did not have kids the only thing, I would have is Prime due to it being included in the Amazon membership.

The simple reason I didn’t re-subscribe Netflix because me and my wife were tired of woke bull**** showed down our throats. It’s like there is absolutely zero new content which is not trying to score some LGBTQIAAP+ brownie points. We love to watch some normal content for a change. Take series “Sex Education” for an example. It feels that 80% of the world is LGBT and it’s a sin being normal. To pander to certain sections, they go overboard and water down the actual content. Which brings me to the main point. 90% of Netflix content is mediocre and remaining 10% of the good content, everyone has already watched. So why continue with the subscription?

You know Netflix has an algorithm in which you can train to suit your personal tastes.

You're not forced to watch anything, right. Instead of complaining why don't you take responsibility and curate Netflix to suit your preferences?

Seriously, I don't follow people always complaining on their social media feeds being polluted with things they don't like when they are too lazy to actually take the time to curate their feeds.

People are always attacking social media or streaming services but most do nothing about it other than throw a tantrum or threaten to leave.

Their algorithm is a piece of crap. I watch only horror, real nature documentaries and sci-fi stuff, but it like to throw in Netflix made drama crap like Tall Girl or the Spanish copycat of 50 shades . I don't care about the LGBT stuff as long as it has something to do with the plot. Euphoria on HBO MAX does the the LGBT thing right, while 13 Reasons Why on Netflix just throws it in there for no real reason. What would make me keep Neflix in the future, is that they flat out buy Starz/Lionsgate and sign a 10 year deal with Curiosity stream.

HAHA, Netflix knows him better than he knows himself. Time to come clean!

It's elasticity of Demand, and their recent price hikes just broke the rubber band. At almost twice the cost of other services, it's a no-brainer they'd be the first to get axed by consumers.

Wonder how many will drop it if\when they crack down on account sharing, some people cant justify it enough for what they watch on it, or just cheaper to just sub for 2 months binge watch what you want and then drop it till a cluster of other shows worth binging are out.

I'm 100% fine with them "fixing" account sharing. If I'm paying for 4 "screens" with my tier, if 4 are currently playing content, exit the app of who was the oldest to launch the app. There, fixed. I'm getting what I paid for and nothing more. It doesn't matter if 1 screen is my tv at home, another screen is the tv I watch at my gf's house, and another screen is at my elderly mothers house so I can watch things with her, and another screen is my phone while I'm donating platelets. There's no ability to crack down on account sharing as there's no way to properly identify that it's actually me watching those 4 "screens", but there is a way to make sure only 4 are active at the same time. If people are sharing past what they paid for, they can fight amongst themselves over who gets kicked off past 4 screens.

If they do another price hike in the next year, I'm totally switching to the subscribe for a month, catch up, then dump plan. I already lowered my tier due to the most recent increase and when the announced it I paid attention to my Netflix usage. There's so little that I actually watch on there now I'm surprised I haven't completely dropped it considering how expensive it's become.

Canceled all my streaming services a couple of years ago and haven’t regretted it since. The “alternative to cable company constantly raising prices” has become the cable company constantly raising prices. This was inevitable, just depended on how long. There is too much content available for free to justify paying anything for media, visual or audible.

I stop paying for this service when they forced a gay, a black and now a trans in every, single, show. Bye bye !

I was watching the show "Pleasure" about women. It was enjoying it, until 5 mins in they interviewed a trans woman. "He-she" ... I turned it off.

Then you turned it back on when your wife went shopping. I'm kidding, but Netflix is very well known for that shiat. What I didn't understand with the Chappelle backlash, was that the LGBT thing is in like 70% of their shows. It's like they won't stop till a LGBT person is in everything, even shows about our solar system.

I have this new thing that when a show features someone gay ( for no real reason) , I pause it to see how long it took them to appear in the show. Usually, it's 5 to 10 mins. I can't remember which show it was, but it took over half the movie for them to appear. I paused it and said wow! We made it halfway through.

But that trans appearing on a female show about pleasure, I was like WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What the hell man. You're so triggered by this.

Look at what you do when you watch a show. You're literally looking to be offended. How can you enjoy a show thinking the way you do?

They lost my trust after they cancelled my favorite shows on there. Dr Who, Mythbusters, Twilight Zone, and a few others.

The child sex abuse and wasn’t an issue?

So in order fix the issue of fleeing subscribers, they will stranglehold them... Yep, good luck. Maybe if a ton of people just cancelled their subscriptions for a month, Netflix would beg users to come back and loosen their chokehold.

I know, this is like the forced FBI Warning that is shown on a DVD or Blu-Ray disc that you bought telling you about how much punishment you'll get if you pirate this video.

I'm like, 'hey man, I just bought a DVD and want to watch a movie.' Who are these messages for exactly? The folks who are ripping DVDs and posting them to torrent sites never see that message.

I dropped Netflix last month before April's price increase went into affect. The price just became too much for me to justify with how little I watch anything on Netflix anymore. Dropped it and picked up Hulu again instead, went with the ad free tier even as it's STILL cheaper than I was paying for Netflix which is sad.

IDK why, but Hulu gives out promotions for HBO MAX, so be on the look out.

Fwiw, Peacock is free and has short ads. Hulu has you paying $13 just for ad free, and their ads are ~2 minutes roughly.

This is going to affect every streaming service at some point. There isn't the enough valued content on the service for price hikes and as the economy starts becoming more of an issue, more people will be dropping streaming services.

My local streaming service announced a price hitch coming next month, so I ditched Netflix to cover the expense.

I used to love Netflix. But today, I have mixed feelings. They're getting very expensive, have been losing good content to other streaming services and their in-house content is mostly of mediocre quality.

I dropped Netflix when they released Cuties and haven't missed it.

I am with everyone here... that has stated they left Netflix due to good content being stopped, cut short, or otherwise discontinued for one reason or another.

It's one thing to lose media due to copyright licensing issues, such as a contract ending. Okay, we're good with that.. but if it's a trending show, you don't go canceling it. You up the license. We're paying to watch those shows on that service. For original Netflix content, when you have something good.. you stay with it. Not go from a single or double season, kill the show.. and then try to come up with something else. It's like going out to eat, only to find your favorite restaurant never has the same thing on the menu.

Squid Game and All Of Us Are Dead, aren't going to carry Netflix into the future. And mom and pop aren't going to give a flying rat's patoot about some stupid gaming scheme to suck out their hard earned retirement dollars. Netflix will never admit, that it isn't this password sharing (I know it is an actual problem) that is the highest key driver in the issues.. it's poor customer service, high prices, and killing off really good content.

I think the password problem issue resolves around the multiple device set up. We used to pay for up to five devices... but therein lies the rub. They may have been using that as an excuse by saying.. "why does my fifth device have to be in my home?" Eh.. who knows.

But in my eyes... it was their content... and a serious lack of anything good enough to continue paying nearly $20/month. It was fun, Netflix.. but, you're old news.

I haven't left Netflix yet, used a VPN to sign up and get a lower price and avoid the added Canadian tax.

When I sit down on my couch for supper and open Netflix, I try to find something to watch and usually just give up and open the custom youtube app on my shield TV and go into the subscription section and INSTANTLY find something that interests me.

Honestly, there's a lot of great YouTube content. I used to feel stupid buying YouTube Premium until I realized how much I actually watch. I'm about to tell my fam to get their own Netflix subscription because I just don't find anything worth watching on there.

My biggest issue with them is tying up HD and Ultra HD quality with number of screens tier.

I just want 1 screen with UHD quality. Forcing people to buy 4 screens tier and only offering UHD there or 2 screens tier and offering HD there just doesn't make sense.

How many people in Western countries not have HD and UHD screens?

I remember getting blasted by a few members here last year who said Netflix is unstoppable, where I argued that the canceling of good series and broadcast networks pulling their content for their own platforms, along with a 20 buck month price tag, they said I was nuts, hmmm...
