Smart Modular宣布，推出Kestral PCIe Optane AIC，可以在主板的PCIe 4.0x16或PCIe 3.0x16插槽上添加总容量为2TB的Intel Optane PMem（傲腾持久内存）。通过软件定义的存储功能，结合扩展卡上的英特尔FPGA来实现内存扩展和加速功能，以实现TB级别的PCIe连接，并在DRAM和NAND闪存之间分层。
Kestral PCIe Optane AIC为全高半长双宽尺寸，接口为PCIe 4.0x16（向下兼容PCIe 3.0），具有四个DIMM插槽，支持最多四条容量为512GB的Intel Optane Optane PMem模块或四条容量为256GB的DDR4 LR-DIMM。其集成了英特尔Stratix 10 DX FPGA（其中集成了四个Arm Cortex-A53内核），板载2GB的DDR4内存，并有8GB的eMMC存储，功耗小于150W，采用被动散热，需要外接6Pin供电。此外，目前的版本支持基于DDR-T接口的Optane PMem模块，但只有Memory Mode，不支持App Direct Mode的3D XPoint特性。
该扩展卡上的英特尔FPGA充当了内存控制器的作用，所以不一定需要英特尔的Cascade Lake或Ice Lake-SP这样的至强处理器配合，也就是说可以与AMD和Arm处理器搭配，甚至基于英伟达Grace CPU构建的系统。对部分用户来说，这样的产品还是有意义的，提供了常规DIMM扩展内存容量外的新方法，要不是只能等待支持CXL协议的下一代设备。
Smart Modular曾在NIA组织的2021 Persistent Memory + Computational Storage Summit上介绍过该产品，不过当时还在开发当中。Smart Modular工程副总裁Mike Rubino表示，随着CXL、CCIX和OpenCAPI等新一代互连标准的发展，Smart Modular的Kestral系列扩展卡解决了行业对各种新型内存模块的扩展和加速需求。
