Temporary outdoor escapes on South Street and in Manayunk offering food, beer and more...
Note: Greater Philadelphia is open for business and welcoming visitors. Safety guidelines regarding COVID-19 continue to evolve. Beginning on April 18, 2022, masking is required in all indoor public spaces in Philadelphia. Businesses may forgo the mask requirement and choose to check vaccination status instead. Guidelines vary in the surrounding region. Advance tickets or reservations remain recommended or necessary at many spots. Your best bet: Check online or call ahead.
Overview
The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society has long been known for putting on its beautiful, bountiful and wildly popular Philadelphia Flower Show, but in recent years, the horticulture heavyweight has gained attention for its PHS Pop Up Gardens, temporary hangouts set up in unused outdoor spaces across the city in the spring, summer and fall.
Locations of the seasonal gardens vary from year to year. In 2022, the pop-up spots return to South Street — a perennial favorite — and Manayunk.
More than just places to kick back and relax, the gardens dole out beer and food from some of the city’s most popular breweries and restaurants.
And special events include craft-making programs, plant swaps, cocktail demos and more.
Both gardens are open seven days a week (weather permitting) beginning April 2, 2022.
2022 Highlights
There’s nothing like enjoying a refreshing beer or cocktail in a picturesque setting, and that’s exactly what the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s popular Pop Up Gardens deliver.
At the long-running South Street location and in the newer Manayunk outpost, patrons can enjoy beautiful plant and garden installations, all kinds of food and drink offerings, and special programming and entertainment.
For the first time ever, the food menu is half plant-based. Depending on the location, diners can enjoy vegan chicken-fried mushroom sandwiches, Primal Supply burgers, vegan crab cake sandwiches, drive-in nachos, caprese melts and more.
On the drink side, imbibers can choose from four varieties of wine, domestic and craft canned beers, and 10 beers on tap, including Half Acre, Dogfish Head, Victory and Neshaminy Creek. Plenty of refreshing non-alcoholic sips are on offer, too.

On the programming front, patrons can expect lots of hands-on activities. Think teacup plantings, natural plant dyeing, beeswax wrap making, macrame making, leaf printing and other activities to suit all interests and experience levels. Prices range from $10-$35 per participant.
On the first Monday (Manayunk) and Tuesday (South Street) of the month, plant lovers can take home a new green friend during the day’s Plant Swap event.
Also new this year: a game room at the Manayunk location, featuring foosball, Skee-Ball, pop-a-shot and other popular games.
