As we inch closer to web3, these cryptos are gaining traction to become the leaders in the metaverse.

The metaverse has opened the door to new experiences and endless possibilities. And thanks to blockchain technology, you can use cryptocurrency to buy and sell items in the metaverse.

The increasing popularity of web3 has given birth to a slew of new cryptos recently, but which ones, in particular, have the most potential for use in the metaverse? Let's find out below.

1. Decentraland (MANA and LAND)

You may have heard of Decentraland before, as it's becoming massively popular among both crypto and metaverse enthusiasts. To quickly recap: Decentraland is a 3D virtual platform based on the Ethereum blockchain. It is essentially a world in and of itself, with its native tokens being MANA, LAND, and Estate.

Within Decentraland, users can buy plots of land which exist as NFTs using MANA. The platform also incorporates gaming and even allows users to develop their own games.

Alongside MANA, users on Decentraland's platform can also use LAND tokens. These are non-fungible and represent the land that you can buy on the platform. These two tokens are integral to Decentraland's ecosystem, so you'll definitely need them if you choose to get involved.

2. The Sandbox (SAND and LAND)

Like Decentraland, The Sandbox is a 3D virtual world built on the Ethereum blockchain. It operates similarly to Decentraland, where users can create their own worlds within the platform and monetize them via NFTs. When a user builds something, it is then minted as an NFT and sold for a profit.

The Sandbox uses two tokens: SAND and LAND. SAND is used to perform transactions, including customizing avatars, purchasing land plots, and general game interaction. As you may have guessed, LAND represents a digital piece of real estate in the form of an NFT, which can have a monetary value.

The platform operates via Alpha Seasons, each consisting of a multi-week event. So, if you're interested in joining The Sandbox, make sure you stay updated on when the next season is coming.

3. Enjin Coin (ENJ)

Enjin is a blockchain-based gaming community that originated in Singapore. Its native currency, Enjin Coin (or ENJ), is an Ethereum-based token designed for NFT trading and in-game transactions. Developers can use it to build decentralized apps or DApps, particularly in the gaming field. This means that it'll most likely have a solid footing within the metaverse.

Apart from that, Enjin has its own digital marketplace, where you can buy and sell rare NFTs using your ENJ.

4. Highstreet (HIGH)

Highstreet is a play-to-earn metaverse that incorporates crypto, NFTs, and gaming so that users can have fun while making a profit. This digital ecosystem is known as Highstreet World.

Highstreet's native currency is an Ethereum-based token known as HIGH, and this is what players can earn within its MMORPG game by taking on one of two roles: Archer or Brawler. These roles involve battling monsters, completing quests, and preserving cities. With their earnings, players can buy plots of land and buildings and advance in the game.

Within Highstreet's metaverse also exists a marketplace, which is the first of its kind. It also has a regular online marketplace that you can use to buy unique NFT drops.

5. Zilliqa (ZIL)

Zilliqa is a smart contract blockchain platform designed to address the scalability issues many other blockchains face. So, unlike many of the other coins and projects listed here, Zilliqa is not based on the Ethereum network, and therefore, its native currency, ZIL, is a coin rather than a token.

ZIL is designed to be a more sustainable cryptocurrency, addressing the huge environmental issue posed by blockchain technology in general.

Zilliqa has also developed its own metaverse-as-a-service platform known as Metapolis, which was released on April 2nd, 2021. This metaverse offers a totally blank canvas on which users can build their unique virtual worlds. The upcoming launch of this platform caused a huge boost in the value of ZIL, so it's now even a more desired token than it was previously.

6. Metahero (HERO)

Metahero is a project developed on the Binance Smart Chain, or the BNB Chain, which combines 3D scanning technology with NFT smart contracts. This project aims to allow for the creation of life-like avatars and other items within the metaverse. So, if you want to create an avatar that looks exactly like you for your metaverse experience or create 3D NFTs, Metahero is there to help.

If you want to use Metahero in this way, you'll need to use their native token, HERO, to conduct transactions. You can buy this token on several exchanges, including Coinbase and Binance.

7. Gala (GALA)

GALA is an Ethereum-based token that acts as the financial backbone of Gala Games. Gala Games is a blockchain-based play-to-earn platform that offers various games that players can use to collect crypto funds. Like many other blockchain-based gaming projects, Gala Games uses NFTs to reward its users for advancing in games.

Players can use GALA tokens to reach milestones within any given game. It is utilized as an exchange mechanism between players. You can also trade NFTs with other players in these games. So, if you're interested in becoming a Gala Game player, GALA will make up for a significant part of your experience.

8. Axie Infinity (AXS and SLP)

Axie Infinity is a hugely popular play-to-earn crypto game that exists as a metaverse, incorporating battles, quests, leader boards, and evening farming into its gameplay.

The Axie Infinity ecosystem operates using two main currencies: Axie Infinity Token (AXS) and Smooth Love Potion (SLP). While one can earn AXS by participating in the game's player vs. player leaderboard, SLP can be created by in-game farming. What's great about SLP is that it can be converted into spendable cash, making Axie Infinity a pretty alluring game for those looking to make a profit.

9. Ether (ETH)

Ethereum's native token, Ether, is currently one of the most popular and valuable cryptos in existence, and is rumored to become one of the biggest currencies within the metaverse. This is because countless metaverse projects are built on the Ethereum blockchain, making it a magnet for enthusiasts and developers.

Due to its sheer popularity, ETH could develop a considerable presence within the metaverse, giving it a whole new market niche that could propel it to one of the top cryptos in the game.

10. Star Atlas (ATLAS and POLIS)

Star Atlas is a Solana-based RPG game that takes place in a futuristic outer space setting. The game's main currency, ATLAS, is used to power the entire ecosystem and allows users to use it as leverage to gain in-game items in the form of NFTs.

Alongside ATLAS, Star Atlas uses its POLIS token for governance. Therefore, players who have POLIS funds will get a say in how the platform is further developed. So, although you don't necessarily need POLIS to become a successful Star Atlas player, it is necessary if you want to get involved in the game's future progression.

These Cryptos Are Set to Become Metaverse Leaders

As you can tell by now, there's a range of ways to have fun, make money, and even participate in developments within the metaverse. Whether you're looking to create your own virtual world, earn crypto through gaming, or even build a collection of NFTs, you can use some of the crypto tokens listed here.
