这种单细胞生物，几乎灭绝地球生命
地球大气并非总像今天那样富含氧气，35亿年前的地球主要是由氮气、二氧化碳和甲烷组成，几乎所有的氧原子都被锁在水分子中，而不是漂浮在空气中。
在蓝细菌的光合作用下，氧气渐渐释放，并且发生了大氧化事件。后来好氧生物开始出现，氧气浓度升升降降，最终达到了今天的21%左右。这其中也慢慢衍生出了更复杂的生物体，蓝细菌也参与其中。如今蓝细胞仍然存在于地球上的各种环境中，依旧向大气输送着氧气 。
