辉瑞/BioNTech 和 Moderna 开发的新冠 mRNA 疫苗在设计和功效上类似，但人体免疫系统对它们的反应并不相同。两款 mRNA 疫苗在 III 期临床试验中的表现基本相同，有效率分别为 95% 和 94%。然而在去年的新冠 delta 变种流行期间，两款疫苗的表现出现了巨大差异：辉瑞降至了 42%，Moderna 只降到 76%。虽然两种疫苗都能产生高水平的中和抗体，但最新研究显示，它们产生了不同的抗体谱（antibody profiles）。辉瑞/BioNTech 疫苗更多产生 IgG 和 IgM 抗体，这些抗体主要存在于血液中。Moderna 疫苗更多产生 IgA 抗体，这种抗体主要存在于如呼吸道之类的粘膜表面，而呼吸道是新冠感染的起点。此外 Moderna 产生的高水平抗体能激活名为自然杀伤细胞的免疫细胞，以及激活名为嗜中性粒细胞（Neutrophils）的免疫细胞去吞噬入侵的病菌。研究报告发表在《Science Translational Medicine》期刊上。
