斯里兰卡周日屏蔽了 Facebook、Twitter、WhatsApp、Viber 和 YouTube 等社交网站，封锁在持续了大约 16 小时后解除。在因经济危机爆发大规模抗议之后，总统 Gotabaya Rajapaksa 周五宣布国家进入紧急状态。周六的抗议演变成了暴力冲突，政府宣布在全国实行宵禁，宵禁持续到下周一上午六点。周日警方对抗议的学生发射了催泪瓦斯。批评者称，经济危机的根源在于历届政府的管理不善，积累了巨大的预算缺口和经常账户赤字。
