The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild sequel launch slips to spring 2023

It was almost three years ago that Nintendo announced it is working on a sequel to the massively popular The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. While not even the game's name has been fully announced yet, a rather hefty delay has hit the project. Instead of the planned 2022 release window, Nintendo is now aiming for a spring 2023 launch for the highly anticipated action-adventure title.

The delay announcement arrived via a video by the game's producer Eiji Aonuma, seen above. A specific reason for the push back was not revealed today.

"We have decided to extend our development time a bit," Aonuma says in the video. "In order to make this game's experience something special, the entire development team is continuing to work diligently on this game, so please wait a while longer."

A first look at the title's gameplay arrived last year, where the developer showcased the open-world return of Hyrule, Link's new adventures in the sky filled with floating islands, new and improved enemies, plus new abilities for our hero. There seem to be time-related powers attached to Link now, as well as some sort of a phasing ability to go through structures.

"The adventure in this sequel will take place not just on the ground, as in the previous game, but also in the skies above," Aonuma adds. "However, the expanded world goes beyond that, and there will be an even wider variety of features you can enjoy."

The sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is coming exclusively to the Nintendo Switch, and per the new release window, it should be here in about a year's time.
