Webstudio
An open source visual development platform
No platform risk
No back-end limitations
No unreadable, one-way code
Webstudio is going to dramatically simplify collaboration between designers and developers on any type of site or web app.
Hi, this is an alpha release of Webstudio - an open-source visual development tool.
You can build your front-end visually with Webstudio and connect it with your digital ecosystem over APIs or with any custom back-end system.
You own everything you create with Webstudio and you’re free to deploy it wherever you want!
You own the data, components, and infrastructure. You can use the hosted version or roll out your own.
Check out the landing site https://webstudio.is and a more technical walkthrough is in the article https://dev.to/oleg008/webstudio... as well as github https://github.com/webstudio-is/...
Why Are We Building This?
We are building this because we want to make publishing unique software on the web much more accessible. We want to enable millions of people who don't have coding skills to create unique experiences on the web.
We are building this because we are looking forward to a world where you own your data and where publishing on the web is affordable or even free for most cases.
We are building this because we want cross-functional team collaboration between designers, developers, and product owners to become faster. We want to enable non-engineers to do the majority of the changes.
@olivier_tassinari1 The foundational philosophy is to be a visual development tool, be as close to the web platform as possible and not reinvent your own abstractions and simplifications.
Webflow has shown massive potential by offering a UI for CSS in its style panel. I am going to the next step, bringing that experience on top of an open foundation, removing the vendor lock-in, and opening it up for integration with a custom codebase.
What a madlad! Finally someone that open sourced a visual web editor. Webflow will hate this 💀
Thanks Oleg, really cool project. Gonna give it a shot later
@matthias_hamborg Lots of differences with both, I guess to completely describe them it will take an article, but a few short points:
1. Plasmic is not open source (vendor lockin) 2. Utopia: generates code, only React, Webstudio doesn't generate code at all, different mechanism, more flexible, will support any framework in the future
