HBO Max and Discovery+ will be combined into one service following merger

Following last week's news that Discovery's shareholders approved its merger with WarnerMedia, which will create one of the largest U.S. media companies, there's now a hint as to how this merger will impact the companies' respective direct-to-consumer streaming services, HBO Max and Discovery+. This morning, Discovery CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels said the companies plan to combine the two streaming services into one offering. "So right out of the gate, we’re working on getting the bundling approach ready, maybe a single sign-on, maybe ingesting content sort of into the other product, etc., so that we can start to get some benefits early on," Wiedenfels said during his presentation at Deutsche Bank's 30th Annual Media, Internet, & Telecom Conference on Monday.

Discovery to combine its Discovery+ with WarnerMedia's HBO Max

Discovery Inc Chief Financial Officer Gunnar Wiedenfels on Monday provided the most concrete details to date about the media company's plans to combine its Discovery+ streaming service with HBO Max once the acquisition of WarnerMedia closes. Wiedenfels said the services would unite to create a more broadly appealing consumer product, with HBO Max's more "male skewing" scripted series complementing Discovery's reality shows, with their heavily female viewership. "The acquisition power of HBO Max, combined with the retention power of the Discovery content, I think, is going to make for a blowout DTC (direct-to-consumer) product," Wiedenfels told the Deutsche Bank Annual Media, Internet & Telecom Conference, using the industry's term for streaming.
