Most Australian households are well-positioned for electric vehicles – and an emissions ceiling would help

By Guest Writer

GUEST OPINION: According to most people, Australia is making a slow shift to the adoption of electrical vehicles (EVs). According to a recent study, the majority of Australians are ready to make the shift despite the inept policies of the government.

We now lead the world in rooftop solar takeup (starting from the back), so the logical step is for us to do the same with EVs.

Many studies have found out that more than half of Australians would like to buy electric vehicles as their next autos. On the other side, the number of individuals who wouldn’t purchase EVs is falling gradually.

Will Australian households shift to electric autos gradually or suddenly?

Of course, we are not expecting a sudden shift to EVs. The shift will be gradual as more individuals drop their old petrol-powered cars for electric ones. Others will buy and drive EVs regularly while still retaining their outdated petrol clunkers.

Around 50% of car-owning households in Australia live in residence with several personal cars and off-street parking. The first shift to EVs would likely come from these households.

Most of these households would be able to charge their electric autos at home. The initial setup cost would be affordable for many of them. A few of the households can install a mini charging station at their garages. Resultantly, their EVs can be charged overnight.

For most drivers, there are still challenges with EV batteries. However, these issues are gradually disappearing as cheaper batteries with higher capacities are made available.

A few years ago, the EVs in Australia had a battery capacity of around 400km to 650km. Of course, the capacity was enough to take care of trips from one part of the country to another such as Brisbane to Sunshine Coast (200km) or Melbourne to Philip Island (280km).

The operating and maintenance costs of EVs are lower than those of petrol or diesel vehicles. However, the initial purchase cost is a big challenge. Nevertheless, there is now a gradual decrease in the cost of electric vehicles.

Also, the types of public electric car chargers are significantly more than 2500 commonplace chargers. Today, almost 500 quick chargers can take your EV to 80% battery capacity in less than one hour.

How can our shift to EVs be quicker and sooner?

If we will attain the internet zero by 2050, a larger share of vehicles in the country must be EVs. Although the federal authorities are late to the party, they are finally accepting the technology as a way to achieve the new 2050 objective. However, less than 1% of car gross sales in Australia are electric cars.

Lots of producers don’t even consider Australia as they try to cater to the needs of more interesting markets. Hence, we have to deal with a limited variety and older fashions of EVs.

But there are ways to deal with this issue. Foremost, the introduction of an “emissions ceiling” for new vehicles by the federal authorities can come in handy at this stage.

With this regulation, the demand for fossil fuel-powered vehicles will reduce, and auto producers will bring more varieties of EVs into Australia. Even the likes of PriceMyCar and related websites will focus on helping clients that need EVs to get the best autos of their choices.

But can these insurance policies be implemented? Of course, they can. Countries that have adopted emission ceilings have an array of varieties of EVs. Once the policies are implemented, drivers would start going for EVs as more affordable electric autos will become available in the country. Factually, there would be no need to pressure any individual to change to EVs as these vehicles will automatically become more attractive to the drivers.

As Australians staying in homes with off-street parking go for EVs, others in flats would also be attracted by the durability and affordability of electric autos. Hence, they will also make the shift.  Then there’s try before you buy with the likes of companies like Evee.

In a nutshell, the sluggishness of Australian authorities cannot stop Australians from making the shift to electric autos… it’s coming.
