Timing a web request the wrong way: with `time curl`

Thursday, February 7, 2030

I have a little Rust project going to create some web apps for my own use. I'm the only user, so the scalability doesn't matter to me, but the performance does. I want responses to be reasonably fast—no, unreasonably fast.

  • trusty tool curl
  • but why 8ms
  • lemme benchmark
  • oh huh, 100ns???
  • okay so that's not it, what is it
  • lemme figure out
  • used httpstat, huh, 0 seconds
  • found the incantation for curl timing, huh, very fast
  • so wait where is curl spending its time
  • steven says "try strace"
  • okay how do i strace

If you have comments or find errors, please email me!

For updates when I post new things, I have a lovely RSS feed you can use.
