近日，有开发者发现，在 App Store 的上传日志和 GitHub 的开源代码中存在许多“realityOS”字样的引用，代码的注释部分描述了允许 iOS 可执行文件使用realityOS 库，这可能暗示了两个操作系统之间的某种形式的交互性。在其他地方，代码提到了“realityOS_simulator”，暗示操作系统将被集成到苹果 Xcode 的模拟器部分。
系统命名方式来看，reality 即现实、真实的意思，正契合 VR（虚拟现实）、MR（混合现实）和AR（增强现实）等设备的系统命名方式。
从代码和 realityOS 字样的出现中，可推测其大概率为苹果 AR/VR 设备的操作系统，正如 iPhone / iPad 运行 iOS / iPadOS，Mac 运行 macOS、Apple Watch 运行 watchOS 一样，realityOS 属于新的 AR 设备的软件生态。
最早在 2017 年，彭博社当时就有过苹果研发新系统的报道，研发代号当时被称为 rOS，直到最近我们才首次确认新系统的全名。
据多家外媒爆料信息显示，苹果 AR 设备的软件开发已经进入实机测试阶段，预计最早将会在今年的 WWDC 上与大家正式见面，realityOS 大概率也会伴随着新硬件一同发布，但因一些开发过程中遇到的问题，其发布日期可能已被推迟到 2022 年底或 2023 年初。
