iPad Is it normal for the Pencil 2 to skip when writing notes on ipad?

Skip as in part of the letters you write will be missing. Not so much on straight lines but rather curved letters like S's. It happens across several note taking apps I have. It doesn't happen with each letter I write but here and there and enough to notice it. It happens both when charging or unplugged. But here's the thing, it never happens when I have my palm off the screen, only when I rest part of my hand on it. So that makes me wonder if this is normal then and maybe I have to prop my hand up 45 degrees in the air just to write on this thing?

The skipping didn't start happening until I updated the OS to ios15.3 but Apple rep says the update didn't cause it and there's no way to uninstall this update in the settings menu.

I'm going to try out a new Pencil 2 tomorrow but highly doubt it's the pencil.
Is there no way to revert back to my previous ios version?

Btw, I have ipad mini 6.

I'm testing right now using scribble and it seems to work for me. I'm also on a mini 6 with iPadOS 15.3.

I also tested just handwriting without conversion to text in not Notepad and GoodNotes and both worked well. The palm rejection was normal for me. I think you might have a hardware problem.

Scribble app? Did you test with one note or Penbook?

I tested One Note - Mini 6, 15.3, Pencil 2, palm on screen. No problems, works fine.

Thanks for testing it out. I’ll take this into Apple tomorrow and get a new replacement sent to me. No doubt my iPad has been killed by the update.

Scribble is Apples handwriting recognizer that operates on any text field. In that case it was on the text field for the post.

I don’t know what penbook is and I don’t have onenote. I tested on Notes and GoodNotes.

This is beyond ridiculous. Changed my mini 6 for a brand new one yesterday and the problem still exists! Are you kidding me! Is this like a curse or something? This is for sure an IOS 15 issue and this has been nothing but a total waste of my time.

There was no way to not update the new iPad to 15.3. I had to when booting it up. Absolutely ridiculous.

It has to be an IOS problem. I may just sell this piece of garbage. A reason why I got another iPad was because of how well it works as a digital notepad.

Maybe I’ll check back in 5 years later to see if Apple fixes this issue with mini 9.

Does it happen in Notes? Maybe a compatibility problem for the software you are using with iPadOS 15.3

Definitely not an app issue. Yup, I use Penbook mainly and when it happens in there, I will open apple notes right away and it does it in there right away. Even do the same with Microsoft one note and it does it in there too.

I downloaded another note app and testing this one too.

This could be an issue with the mini because when I tested it out on the 11 Pro in the store, I couldn't replicate the problem. If I can't find a note app that won't work properly then my only option is to buy another mini from the store and not update the OS. Because going by memory, Im almost certain when I booted up my first mini and set it up for the first time it did not force my to update to 15.3 because I used the thing for 2 weeks and it was working just fine u til I updated to 15.3. If this works, then I'd sell my current mini which will suck because I'll lose money on it. I just need to confirm on whether brand new in box minis require the IOS update out of the box. Will have to look for a very recent mini unboxing video

I really don't want to sell the mini as I love it and it's a perfect device for me but if I can't use it as a notepad it's completely useless. I'm not paying this kind of money on something I can't use as a notepad

I tried hard again this AM to repeat this in Notes and absolutely could not. I had my hand firmly on the screen as I wrote and drew, both in portrait & landscape. Mini 6, Pencil 2, 15.3.1.

It is odd. I tried variations - connected/not connected to a charger, in a magnetic back case and bare tablet. I drew circle and lines, wrote lengthy sentences incursive.

Did you ever try with a different pencil?

I just checked, Im on 15.3.1 too. Apple suggested I try to wipe the new iPad through my PC iTunes desktop app, set it up as a new ipad and then install the note apps again without restoring from iCloud back up. This is the only thing I haven't tried yet.

When I went to the store, they did wipe the previous mini with their mac but I did an immediate restore from my iCloud backup as the rep told me to do so - but realistically I should not have restored from backup right away. This would have saved me from having to order a new iPad and another trip back to the store to get it.

And when I previously tried wiping the iPad and reinstall the note apps without restoring from iCloud, I did the wipe through the iPad settings and not by hooking it up to the computer.

Yes I tried another brand new pencil 2 and same thing (on the old iPad). I could swap for another pencil or get apple to get me new tips but the chances of this fixing it is slim to none.

Does it do it in the built in Notes app (you don't download it)?

Yes

I just wiped the new iPad through the computer again but didn't do a restore from iCloud so will give this a try. Reinstalled my note apps manually. So far so good.

IT STILL DOES IT! I'm done with this, going to sell this piece of garbage. I can't take this anymore trying to get an overpriced device to work properly. Wasted so much time and money on this issue. So long mini 6. I've tried everything and it still skips even on Apple notes, the app that comes with the ipad OS.

I don't know what the cause of your issue is, but my Pencil 2 works perfectly on my Mini 6 (and on my 11" iPad Pro), on all iPadOS versions including the latest 15.3.1. I have tried to make it skip, resting my palm on the iPad in various positions, but it stubbornly works perfectly in Notes and Adobe Fresco. The only difference between the Mini 6 and the iPad Pro is that the latter has ProMotion (120Hz) so does not have the very slight lag the Mini 6 has.
So the problem is not intrinsically with the Pencil, or the Mini 6, or iPadOS.

Talked to Apple again, senior support. They said I have two options.

They can send me a replacement ipad, which they can't guarantee or know if it will force the ios update on initial turn on like the replacement i have now did. But if it does, I just send it back. It will still come in a brown box so the chances of the new one that I receive being the same case in forcing the ios updat on initial turn on is pretty high. I mean I could be lucky and receive one that doesn't but seeing how they're all made the same way and they all come in the brown box (though across several distribution centers), the odds are I get another ipad that forces me to update. The only way I know forsure that I can get one that doesn't force the 15.3.1 update is if I buy a new one from the store off the shelf.

Or I wait until they release a fix for this in the next ios update but god knows when this will be. It could be in 6 months from now for all I know. But they have already received complaints on this specific issue with 15.3.1, they just can't see exactly how many.

They could send me new pencil tips but I'm not sure that is the issue.

See above. I just got off the phone with Apple sr. support. They have forwarded this issue to their engineers and they said that there are already issues of this exact same issue already reported in their system. So it is an ios issue. Just not everyone is experiencing it.

It is 100% a software issue.

Okay after some researching, found a video on Youtube, I was able to downgrade the firmware. It worked, back to 15.3 now. This was the earliest version I was able to go back to.

Does anyone remember what ios version comes out of the box on new retail ipad mini 6?

I was thinking mine had 15.0 but can't be sure (no version earlier than 15.0 is supported on the Mini 6). And an update was available (15.1?) when I activated it.

Just found out 15.2 is what it comes with when I bought it. Been trying to downgrade to 15.2, boy what a freakin nightmare. Is this a PC product I bought with a fake apple logo on it? Seriously this is just ridiculous!

I've reformatted the iPad more times in the past 2 weeks than I have any of my PC's in the past 5 years!

I'm on 15.3 right now and will wipe the iPad again but hoping I can bypass the update when I start it off as a new device again. For the 607th time!

I'm at the breaking point and about to sell the mini, I can't take anymore of this.

If 15.2 is no longer signed by Apple you won’t be able to use it. I’ll look and see and update this post later.

Edit: Unfortunately Apple is no longer signing iPadOS 15.2. Here is the MacRumors article. It looks like 15.2.1 might still be signed.

Edit 2: Sorry but it looks like Apple stopped signing 15.2.1 as well. You can’t downgrade from 15.3 any longer.
www.idownloadblog.com

Apple no longer signing iOS 15.2.1, thwarting downgrades from iOS 15.3

Apple has closed the signing window for iOS & iPadOS 15.2.1, which means it's no longer possible to downgrade from iOS or iPadOS 15.3.

That is how Apple does iOS and iPadOS updates. There is no workaround unless you can find an iPad already with 15.2.1.
