Microsoft reminding users it’s time to update their device

Computers still running Windows 10 version 20H2 need to be updated to a newer version of the operating system, as this release will reach the end of support.

Without support, Windows 10 version 20H2 will no longer be provided with security patches and additional improvements, as it’ll be considered an abandoned piece of software.

The end of support will be reached on May 10, 2022, and it concerns Windows 10 Home, version 20H2, Windows 10 Pro, version 20H2, Windows 10 Pro Education, version 20H2, and Windows 10 Pro for Workstations, version 20H2.

“These editions will no longer receive security updates after May 10, 2022. Customers who contact Microsoft Support after this date will be directed to update their device to the latest version of Windows 10 to remain supported,” Microsoft says.

Needless to say, devices where this old version of Windows 10 is still installed can easily be updated to a newer version of the operating system via Windows Update. At the same time, if they have the necessary hardware, they can move to Windows 11 once the update becomes available.

The update options

However, sticking with Windows 10 is the only option for some computers that aren’t officially supported by the transition to Windows 11.

Microsoft will continue to support Windows 11 until 2025, as per the original policy.

“For customers who are using a PC that won’t upgrade, and who aren’t ready to transition to a new device, Windows 10 is the right choice. We will support Windows 10 through October 14, 2025 and we recently announced that the next feature update to Windows 10 is coming later this year. Whatever you decide, we are committed to supporting you and offering choice in your computing journey,” Microsoft said not a long time ago.

The rollout of Windows 11 is still underway at the time of writing, with Microsoft planning to complete it by the summer of this year.
