The PC you pick will have a direct effect on your gaming experience. It will affect which games you can play, how good they will look, how smooth the animations will be, etc. This doesn’t mean that everyone should get the most expensive and most powerful PC, however, since very few games require the absolute top specs to run. So, before you start looking at a PC, first assess what your budget is and start looking at some of the essentials. Let’s take a look at some of the things you should look for when buying a gaming PC.

The CPU

The CPU is not the most important part of a gaming PC but since it will be at its core, we have to put it first on the list. The quality of a processor is predicated mainly on its clock speed and the number of cores. The brand is also very important. Intel and AMD are the only ones you should consider in our opinion.

Intel chips are more expensive but have better single-core performance on average. But you should know that the difference in performance between AMD and Intel chips is minimal. So, if budget is an issue for you, we suggest you go with an AMD chip.

Most games do not use multiple cores at a high level, so you should be fine with a four-core/four-thread CPU. If you want to do more advanced things like video editing, however, then you might want to look at something with eight cores at least.

Clock speed will ultimately dictate how fast a GPU can complete tasks and how games will run. You can never go too high with clock speed, but anything around the 3.5 GHz to 4.0 GHz mark should be more than enough for most modern games.

RAM also plays a very central role in how well games run as it will have a direct influence on lag. RAM is a secondary form of memory that can store certain elements of a game and serve them rapidly without having to go to the PC’s hard drive.

While RAM is important, don’t obsess over it too much as most games do not require that much RAM to run well. 8 GB of RAM should be more than enough to handle most games today, but we suggest you pick something with at least 16 GB of RAM just to be safe. 

If you want to be able to play multiple types of games at once or do things like sports betting and watching games in the background while playing games, then good RAM becomes increasingly important. The GPU/Graphics Card

The brand is extremely important when picking a GPU. Nvidia is viewed as the world’s best GPU manufacturer followed by AMD.

If you’re looking for an affordable but still serviceable card, we suggest that you look at Nvidia’s GeForce line. AMD cards are cheaper, but if you want the cheapest card possible without compromising performance, look for something with a RX 570, 580, or 5600XT card.

If you’re ready to spend a bit more for better performance, then you could look at Nvidia’s GTX 20 line. AMD, unfortunately, doesn’t have cards that can compete with the top-tier cards that Nvidia offers, so your choice there will be much more limited.

Hard Disk

The hard disk you pick will be important as well. But size is not the main thing you should look for, however. Here, the type of hard drive will make a much bigger difference. The two main types of hard disks on the market are HDD drives and SSD drives. 

HDD drives are the oldest of the two and consist of a magnetic tape disk while SSD drives are like large memory cards. SSD drives are usually faster and are less prone to damage, so they’re usually a better option for gaming and most applications. So, if you’re stuck between both choices, you can’t go wrong with an SSD as long as it has the storage capacity you need.
