We make gifting US savings bonds to kids easy
The idea for Baby Bonds first came up in mid-2021. I was discussing with my fiancée how we always get our nephew these gifts, that he never really plays with beyond the first 5 minutes. If only there was a way so that we could just give him Apple or Tesla stock instead, that would be amazing.
A few months later, I had the initial shape of what came to be Baby Bonds. We decided to focus on US savings bonds initially, which in the recent past have seen a resurgence in interest with the Series I bond prices. We also expanded the application to include both one time and recurring contributions, meaning that Grandma and Grandpa can setup an annual gift to Timmy and Tara and we handle everything from there.
@zeus_comm Thanks Eli!
So I'm pretty excited to help parents help setup their kids for success in the future. One of the things that blew my mind as I was diving into the market was: 1) there are lots of kids that are born each year, and 2) now more than every parents are focused on creating wealth for their children. Prior to the pandemic, family's began saving at rates that we hadn't seen in decades.
It will be interesting to see how we can encourage more long term thinking when it comes to giving gifts, as well as exploring other kinds of investment opportunities we can support.
And to answer your last question, I would say I was astonished at how many other parents felt a need for something like this. Going into it there was an assumption that parents really only wanted to receive physical gifts for their children and were against the idea of receiving money. At least in the dozens or so of parents we have interviewed and had test out the product, this couldn't be further from the case. Yes, this is a bias that still exists so it may not be for everyone, but it does seem like people are very keen on the idea.
