Hello Product Hunt! 👋👋👋

Murat here from Sourcegraph ~ I’m excited to share my team’s latest development with you all—Sourcegraph for VS Code.

Why did we build this thing? 🤔 We know that open-source projects are invaluable for finding best practices, searching for code, and exploring open source libraries. We wanted to make our index of OSS more accessible to all developers — we built this extension so VS Code users can access 2 million+ open source repositories from their IDE.

You can read more about our commitment to indexing open-source here: https://about.sourcegraph.com/bl...

At Sourcegraph, we use VS Code every day, and we wanted to give ourselves a way to access Sourcegraph’s code search for code without moving back and forth between our IDEs and web browsers. We believe that bringing the IDE + search workflows closer together has the potential to be a huge time saver!

How does it work? 😳 The VS Code extension builds Sourcegraph’s search into the IDE so that it feels like a native experience. The extension pops open a Sourcegraph search bar in a new tab in the IDE — one that looks just like what you’ll see at Sourcegraph.com.

You can:

🔎 Search 2 million+ open source repositories, from your IDE, with no signup required 📖 View open-source code files as if they’re local files, and view repositories with the VS Code file tree 🪄 Hover over functions to see precise Code Intelligence

Also, search all of your own personal code — even if it isn’t local on your machine — by creating a free Sourcegraph account and syncing your repositories!!

And, if you’d like to see a couple of examples of how I already use the extension day to day, you can read my blog post here 👉 https://about.sourcegraph.com/bl...
