Helping people with psychological issues – a bet we can win

According to recent research, 1 out of 6 women worldwide suffers from depression, and the number is expected to rise. The number of male adults is lower but those who attempt to commit suicide are most often men. So, while women suffer from depression, men are the ones who finally put an end to their lives. The reason I mention that is because people tend to believe that women are more vulnerable when it comes to psychological disorders. However, things are not like that at all.

Both sexes struggle with anxiety and depression as well as other types of disorders. The only thing that makes us different is that women usually express it by getting sick and paying a visit to a psychiatrist. Men underestimate the issue until it is usually too late. In addition, the problem knocks on the doors of people in all social and financial classes with no exception.

It is, therefore, evident that everyone has a chance of getting sick at some point without having to lead ourselves to the conclusion that this is something we cannot change. It is vital to educate ourselves and treat the dangers that threaten our health in a mature and confident way. Also, we have to be prepared for the case where we will have to help people from our close environment who may eventually need our help. Let’s see the mindset we have to adapt to keep ourselves open to all of these scenarios.

Sometimes we think that people who face personal difficulties will have to work on them with themselves or their personal psychologist. Even though, it is great that we have become more open-minded when it comes to psychological and mental illnesses we still have a long way to go. For now, as a society, all we know is that people who are sick in their souls should go to a doctor just like people who are sick on their bodies. The idea of visiting an expert is no longer taboo and this is a great achievement for humanity.

But let’s take a moment and think about why people have to turn to experts to find a solution to their problem. The reason is that there are no longer so many people available to listen. While everyone is eager to talk and be heard no one seems to care about listening to other people’s problems. The result is that we grow up in a society where no one is willing to hear us out and finally we do not have anyone to share our problems with. Being communicative includes sharing the things that trouble our minds as well as the good stuff. When this is taken away from us, no wonder why we get depressed.

Advising someone to go to a psychiatrist is a wise thing to do. Still, this should not mean that we want to get rid of them. In other words, we do not suggest people see a professional because we are bored of them talking to us about their problems. The psychiatrist will not substitute the relationship we have with them. For everything our mind can think of, there is a professional that can help. Jobs that never existed in the past are now a real fact.

The presence of experts should not turn us into lazy citizens who refuse to take responsibility and care. Social interactions should carry all the awareness and love people should share for each other. The expert only comes to work additionally and softens some of the pain our friends or relatives feel. We should consider ourselves capable of helping. In the meanwhile, we should not be confused; we are capable but not responsible.

If we hold ourselves responsible we will fall into the trap of having guilt and this way we will not only fail to help others but we will also start having problems of our own. The important thing here is to understand that we can indeed help. No one forces us to do it and it is only up to us whether we want to contribute to the solution of another person’s problem but if we wish to play that role we can surely do it.
