Mac Power Users with Austin Evans (podcast notes)

Listen here.

It's really remarkable to me the number of geeks I know that started with some form of, “I just wanted to customize things.” Going back to the old Macs, to me, it was trying to make it do things. You know, customizing the original Mac, you’d go in and alter the icons. You could do so much stuff on that system, and for so many of us just doing things like changing colors and icons was our first deep dive into the stuff. And I think that was kind of where the love affair started for me, and I think it's true for a lot of people.

I’m absolutely here too. My first “nerdy” things I did with a computer was to use apps like ShapeShifter to install and modify custom themes for macOS.

I feel like a non-insignificant part of the Apple community today is against giving users the ability to customize things like we used to, and while I’m not supportive of removing all security like the old methods, I do think that it’s important for young people especially to be able to go a bit wild with their computers and tweak them all to hell.
