Apple Watch Series 8 unlikely to come with big upgrades

Like most other hardware companies out there, Apple is also planning in advance when it comes to upgrades for its devices, but in the case of the Apple Watch, it looks like users will have to wait quite a lot of time for any substantial improvements.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says that while Apple is indeed planning several sensor upgrades for the Apple Watch, they won’t land anytime soon, with at least one of them expected to see the daylight in the second half of the decade.

More specifically, the body temperature sensor, which Apple originally planned to launch this year on the new Apple Watch coming in September, will no longer go live in 2022. The company has already delayed it, and nobody knows for sure when a body temperature sensor could make its way to the Apple Watch.

New design coming this year

Then, it’s the blood pressure sensor, which Apple considers to be a breaking feature for the smartwatch. This time, the upgrade is expected to be two or three years away from the moment it gets the go-ahead for production devices.

And last but not least, a glucose monitoring tool would land until at least 2025 or even later, Gurman explains.

In other words, the upcoming Apple Watch Series 8 wouldn’t come with any massive upgrades in terms of sensors. But is there anything exciting coming on the Apple Watch front after all?

The 2022 model is expected to ship with a new design that was originally projected to be introduced for the current models. The rounded edges could thus be dropped in the favor of straight sides borrowed from the iPhone, as this is an idea that Apple originally wanted to release on the Series 7 but eventually pushed it back due to production struggles.
