Standard models to also start at 64GB of storage

Apple is planning several big changes on the upcoming iPhone generation projected to launch in the fall of 2022.

And in addition to some models killing off the notch, it looks like the company is also planning some substantial under-the-hood upgrades, at least for the Pro models.

First and foremost, some context.

Just like in 2021, Apple will stick with a four-model iPhone lineup for 2022, though this time, the company will give up on the iPhone mini form factor. The 5.4-inch model will be replaced by a new 6.7-inch version of the iPhone that will wear the Max branding (without the Pro tag though).

The iPhone 14 lineup should therefore be the following:

  • iPhone 14 – 6.1-inch display
  • iPhone 14 Max – 6.7-inch display
  • iPhone 14 Pro – 6.1-inch display
  • iPhone 14 Pro Max – 6.7-inch display

It’s believed the Pro models would no longer feature a notch but come with a punch-hole display that allows Apple to integrate the front-facing components, including Face ID, right into the screen. The standard will still sport a notch.

iPhone 14 upgrades

According to analyst Jeff Pu from Haitong International Securities, iPhone 14 Pro models could be upgraded to 8GB of RAM, though it’s not yet clear if the standard models are expected to come with 6GB of RAM or receive the same upgrade.

Of course, this is rather unlikely given Apple wants to make a bigger difference between the Pro and the standard models.

At the same time, the analyst says in the note obtained by MacRumors that the iPhone 14 lineup will start at 64GB of storage, and this is quite a surprise given the base models currently start at 128GB of storage. This could be a sign Apple wants to make the device a little bit more affordable, but given it’s Apple we’re talking about here, you’d better not hold your breath for this.
