The actions against Chinese social media sites Zhiu, Weibo and Douban are part of Beijing’s ongoing efforts to clean up online content, which pose regulatory pressure for online content providers in China.

Chinese online communities, where tens of millions of Chinese users discuss various social topics, could face greater scrutiny from the country's regulators following the latest punishments on Chinese social media sites including Zhihu, Quora-like Q&A platform, microblogging site Weibo and social media platform Douban.

According to a statement released by the Beijing Internet Information Office on Monday, the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) had asked it to summon senior executives of Zhihu for unlawful release of information.

The internet regulator has demanded Zhihu to rectify wrongdoings immediately and accordingly suspend some functions.

Zhihu, which was listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol “ZH” since March this year, saw its share to tumble 9.5 percent following the announcement of the Chinese internet regulator on Monday.

Last week, the Cyberspace Administration of China fined microblogging operator Weibo CNY 3 million for repeatedly punishing unlawful and forbidden information.

In response, Weibo has launched campaigns to terminate accounts which publish fake news and information that harm China’s socialist values and rectify those accounts which promote obscene information using vulgar language like eryizi, a pejorative referring to effeminate men.

Zhihu and Weibo’s punishments followed the similar move by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology to remove Douban from the country’s app stores and fined CNY1.5 million over unlawful release of information.

Douban is a mishmash of Imdb, Spotify and Myspace that allow users to review books, movies and music and discuss various social topics,

The actions against Zhiu, Weibo and Douban are part of Beijing’s ongoing efforts to clean up online content, which pose regulatory pressure for online content providers in China.
