The next version of iOS will support the iPhone 7 and newer

Now that iOS 15 is already here, Apple can already start the development of the next big version of the operating system.

And in addition to new features, performance improvements, and bug fixes, iOS 16 is also expected to bring one very big change related to the devices that are actually supported.

In other words, iOS 16 will no longer run on the same iPhones as its predecessors, meaning that Apple will drop some older models in order to focus on new-generation devices.

A report from the French site iPhoneSoft, Apple wants to only support the iPhone 7 and newer once iOS 16 is released, so the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus are finally getting the ax.

A preview at WWDC in the summer

Launched in 2015, the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus are still supported by iOS 15, and without a doubt, this is quite a surprise for a device this old. However, it looks like 2022 will be the end of these two devices in terms of operating system updates, though they will obviously continue to run and still be compatible with the majority of apps for many more years.

Apple hasn’t yet officially announced the devices to be supported by iOS 16, and don’t expect any official information on this front to be shared anytime soon.

However, Apple will most likely reveal the list of supported devices in iOS 16 when the company ships the first beta build of iOS 16, which is expected to happen at WWDC in the summer. As it happens every year, the next major operating system update for the iPhone is due in September, and it’ll come pre-loaded on the new-generation models also launching in the fall.

The iPhone 14 lineup will include four different models called iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
