macOS 12.2 is getting a better Apple Music app, and you can test it now

The streaming parts of the Apple Music app will perform better after the update

With the introduction of macOS Catalina in 2019, Apple finally brought the reign of iTunes to an end by splitting its features into dedicated Podcasts, TV, and Music apps. There was just one problem — the new Music app isn’t really that different from iTunes, and even the new streaming elements render like web pages instead of natively.

As 9to5Mac points out, developers testing a beta version of the next macOS Monterey update, 12.2, have spotted an updated version of the Music app that addresses some of those issues. While the iTunes-ish parts of the app remain the same, the word is that the Music and TV app now uses native AppKit views instead of web views, which should make everything run faster and be easier to use when you’re interacting with the streaming services. Searching for music or scrolling through content is where you may notice the most difference.

Even better, you can try it out yourself if you’re willing to install beta software on your laptop or desktop machine, as the public beta of 12.2 became available today. If you have one of the new MacBook Pro laptops and install the beta, you may also notice improved ProMotion scrolling supported in Safari.

The beta program is open to all on Apple’s website, and if you’re not sure about diving in, we have instructions on how to get set up. If you need to back up your software or would like to create a separate partition to install it without messing with your current installation, we’ve got you.

The acknowledgment that "native is better than web" an apple story.

I just want to be able to access the playlists that I’ve created on my iPhone. Right now I have to move songs over then manually move them around on the device instead of the way you could do it through iTunes.

I’ve never run into that. Gonna have to go see if I can replicate.

For a company that claims to love music (and I actually believe them) Music on Mac is an unmitigated piece of flaming hot garbage.

It’s actually scandalous that they allowed it to ship. Hopefully the new version is at least functional.

Word around the street is that the Music team is decent but the legacy iTunes stack + that team is garbage.

I mean no product is perfect but it’s been stunning to see Apple apologists pan Spotify for being an Electron app when Music has been basically the same thing for years.

iTunes on windows is a tragedy, I wish there was a solution, for the price I’m paying..

At least it’s not Safari on Windows LOL.

Apple Music on iPhone is a far more pleasant experience than the Mac. The Mac app is slow and often fails to refresh in a sensible manner. It is so inferior that I simply resort to only listening to music on my phone even if I am sitting with my laptop unless it is out of reach for choice if charging point, etc. Bloaty McBloatface.

The entire Apple Music experience for anyone who has a music collection is a catastrophe, even if you subscribe to the streaming service. I can’t believe all these years later, I’m STILL being punished for having music files (especially if they weren’t purchased on iTunes) if I try to sync via iCloud.

All I want to do is to be able to sync my files to my phone for local storage, AND add the occasional album/playlist from the streaming service. But Apple says I can only do one or the other and, if it’s the latter, my precious and meticulously curated metadata is at risk of being overwritten with the wrong info.

Also, we can all agree that it’s absolutely ludicrous that pieces of software like this are locked behind OS updates, right? What is it about this version of Music that couldn’t run on Catalina?

Apple updates nearly every single one of its apps with new operating systems. It’s a major reason new releases of iOS get such high adoption. It’s also a driver of new hardware sales when features are locked to specific hardware (see all the macOS features exclusive to Apple Silicon).

So it’s mostly an (intentional) business decision. Apple is filled with brilliant people; they’re not incapable of pushing out app updates separately (and could do so through the App Store), but choose not to.

You could hide apple music from the sidebar in Catalina (it’s right at the top otherwise) but that option disappeared in Monterey. Hopefully that comes back for most people who use other streaming services or just a local music library.

Finally! That explains why existing app is so slow and laggy even on MacBook Pro 16. Nice to see that industry starts to understand that WebViews is a dead end.

I mean it took the world’s richest company several years to release this update. Do you really think every indie developer has the time and resources to completely rewrite their Electron app to native code?

WebViews are inherently inferior in terms of responsiveness but they are also quicker and easier to implement.

It doesn’t matter, as long they don’t fix the macOS 12 usb hub bugs, I’m staying on 11. Any news on that?

It’s still using the JET framework, which is what the Mac App Store uses.

Any one who has used the MAS will know how buggy and terrible it is. Apple just can’t innovate anymore in the software area.
