Chinese regulator asks for inspections on Tencent's new apps and updates

On Wednesday, China Central Television (CCTV) cited the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) as saying that 9 Tencent products were determined to violate the rights and interests of users.
Therefore, the ministry has decided to carry out transitional administrative guidance measures, requiring Tencent to submit any new apps or updates for its review before they can be uploaded.
In response, Tencent said that they are continuously working to enhance user protection features within their apps, and also have regular cooperation with relevant government agencies to ensure regulatory compliance. "Our app remains functional and available for download," said the company.
Citing an unnamed source, Chinese news outlet Yicai reported that MIIT lately issued a new regulation, which is, from November 24 to December 31, all mobile apps and updates will be subject to a 7-day review by the ministry before being launched.
Despite the crackdown on the Internet sector, China has increased its efforts to defend users' rights and interests.
On November 1, the country's most recent personal information protection law went into force. The legislation sets a comprehensive data protection system for the collection, use, and disclosure of personal information of persons resident in the nation, akin to the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
