The price of this device has reached a record level

Apple doesn’t seem to have any intention of producing an iPhone with an USB-C port because this would pretty much mean the company is giving up on its proprietary Lightning port.

And despite the constant pressure from both consumers and organizations across the world, the Cupertino-based tech giant sticks with Lightning on the new iPhones as well.

In the meantime, a student has managed to build what Apple clearly doesn’t want to: an iPhone with a USB-C port, and as it turns out, everything works as you’d expect it to work.

In other words, it charges just like an Android device, though the owner clearly said from the very beginning that updating, restoring, or erasing the iPhone isn’t recommended because this would break the port.

Sold at record price

The USB-C iPhone X ended up on eBay where it enjoyed a massive success. The auction came to an end this week, and the lucky winner has to pay no more, no less than $86,000 for the device.

This is clearly quite a lot for such a prototype that can’t even be updated, but it looks like some people just want an iPhone with USB-C so much they’re willing to pay the price of nearly 86 brand-new iPhones.

The device can’t even be used as a daily driver. Its creator clearly explained this iPhone is just a prototype, and using it as your main phone isn’t recommended.

“I guarantee that the phone will work when you receive it but if you don't follow the aforementioned guidelines you are on your own. So basically you can do whatever you want with it but don't expect anything from me if you break something. It is just a prototype,” he said.

So there you go, Apple, people are willing to spend big bugs on an iPhone with USB-C. Now you know what you have to do.
