Couchbase has introduced Capella a hosted Database-as-a-Service on AWS. The company says Capella will make it faster, easier and more affordable for developers working on enterprise apps.

Couchbase is a distributed NoSQL cloud database that grew from a merger between Membase and CouchOne, with the aim of creating a scalable, high-performance document-oriented database system. Couchbase combines the properties of a distributed document database (JSON) with features of a traditional DBMS including distributed SQL, transactions, and ACID guarantees.

The Couchbase team says that Capella provides the advantages of Couchbase server in a hosted DBaaS, meaning database management tasks are reduced. Capella supports the features in Couchbase Server 7, which fuses the best aspects of relational databases like SQL queries and distributed ACID transactions with the flexibility of a modern JSON document database.

Like Couchbase, Capella supports the use of SQL, avoiding the need to learn another query language. Alongside this, developers can use multi-model features including document, key-value, and full text search, with flexibility on data structures. There are SDKs  covering Java, NodeJS, Python, .NET, Go, Scala, C/C++, Ruby, PHP; iOS - Objective-C, Swift; Android – Java/Kotlin; C#, and JavaScript.

A cost-based optimizer helps minimize the cost of running queries by taking into account the cost of memory, CPU, network transport, and disk usage when choosing the optimal plan to execute a query. Capella uses a "memory first" architecture that the team says provides millisecond responses for highly interactive applications, with improving price performance as users scale.
Running Couchbase Capella on AWS provides integration with 20 AWS services into its architecture including Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS), AWS Lambda, Amazon GuardDuty and AWS Shield.
There are also plans to add support for additional cloud providers in the future. There's a free trial version so potential users can try out Capella.
