Update: On Double 11, JD.com's sales hit $48.6 billion and Alibaba's Tmall takes in $84.5 billion

[Update: Tmall released sales data on Double 11 in the early morning of November 12, which is 540.3 billion yuan ($84.5 billion).]

According to JD.com and Tmall, two major online shopping platforms in China, transactions on the former have outnumbered 311.4 billion yuan ($48.6 billion) at the November 11 shopping festival. On Tmall, more than 410 medium-and small-scale brands saw their sales pass the threshold of 10 million yuan ($1.56 million) as of 00:45 am on the day.

Details:

The record-breaking data on JD.com is from November 1 to 2:09 pm on November 11. The company also released data on new users’ registration. Among the customers registered on November 1, the 19-30-year-old accounts for 30.5%. Compared to new registered JD users on October 20, this is 2.3 times of growth, the JD statement said.

This time, home appliances contributed the most to the total sales on JD.com. Most of the brands in this category, including Haier, LG, etc., saw sales exceed daily sales generated on last year’s Double 11.

Meanwhile, this is supposed to be a "green" Double 11. Sellers on JD have used recycled packages, and the usage data outnumber 11.35 million times. It realized the maximum utilization of renewable energy on record, noted JD’s statement.

As for Tmall, by press time, it hasn’t released detailed data on sales, nor did Taobao. But vice president of its business group, Chui Xue, said in a press meeting that Double 11 shows their focus on improving sellers’ and buyers’ experience. In the meantime, they particularly value the shoppers’ needs in the niche market.

Context:

It’s a relatively quiet Double 11 in China, with fewer shopping platforms releasing their sales data.

Double 11 this year lasted for 22 days, the longest one ever. It used to celebrate single men and women because of the four “1” symbolism.

The Double 11 has grown in Southeast Asia. On Lazada Singapore, the Alibaba-backed e-commerce marketplace, sales in the first hour increased by 10 times.
