Discord is a great application that lets you chat with your friends and meet like-minded folk. But it's not for everyone. If you want to quit Discord for good, you might be wondering if you can delete your Discord account.

The good answer is, yes, you can permanently delete your Discord account. It's easy to do, though you may have to tidy some things up first before you can do it.

Here's everything you need to know about how to delete your Discord account.

Before You Delete Your Discord Account

If you own any Discord servers, you need to take care of these before you can delete your account. This means you either delete the server or you transfer ownership. This only impacts servers that you created and are the current admin of—those that you moderate or have any special role in require no action.

To delete your Discord server on desktop:

  1. Click the name of the server in the top-left.
  2. Click Server Settings.
  3. Click Delete Server on the left menu.
  4. Click the Delete Server button to confirm.

Alternatively, to transfer ownership of your Discord server to someone else on desktop:

  5. Enter your password and your two-factor authentication code (if applicable).
  6. Press Delete Account to confirm the process.

How to Restore Your Discord Account

When you press that button to delete your Discord account, the request doesn't action immediately. Instead, your account enters a "pending deletion" state for 14 days.

This means that if you regret deleting your account, did it accidentally, or someone maliciously did it without your knowing, you can reverse it.

First, log in to Discord on the desktop or browser app. You'll see an "account scheduled for deletion" message. Beneath this is a Restore Account link. Click this and you'll immediately be back into your account.

If you choose to delete your account again after this, the 14-day timer will start from the top.

How to Disable Your Discord Account

If permanently deleting your Discord account seems too much, you can choose to disable your account from the same menu (within User Settings).

When you disable the account, you'll stop receiving any notifications from Discord. However, people can still send you friend requests, and these will remain pending until/if you reactivate your account.

Reactivating your account after you disable it is as simple as signing in to Discord. Unlike an account deletion, there's no time limit to this. You can take a Discord hiatus for as long as you please.

Try a Discord Alternative

Discord isn't the first application that lets you chat with others online, nor will it be the last. Perhaps you quit Discord because it didn't serve its purpose for you? If so, you should check out one of the many competing services to see if they work better. Modern apps like Element or the classic Mumble and TeamSpeak are all great alternatives.
