China’s ride-hailing service provider Didi is experimenting new food service Aoao Chifan in Tianjin of northern China, according to Tech Xingqiu.

Didi is likely to replicate the business to its overseas markets, according to the news report.

Details:

According to corporate information platform Tianyancha, the company behind Didi’s new service Aoao Chifan was Saidi Sifan Food and Beverage Management Co., Ltd. Didi Chuxing’s HR managers were the supervisor and stakeholder of Saidi Sifan, respectively.

Aoao Chifan’s service currently can cover Tianjin University and Nankai University. Previously, the service was branded as Manzu Gaifan. The name change took place last October.

The news report said that compared to food delivery service Meituan and Alibaba’s Ele.me, Aoao Chifan might gain an edge by free delivery fees and low-price strategies. One of the users successfully ordered a meal for less than 10 yuan ($1.56). A variety of coupons are also available on the platform.

Context:

The market value of the food delivery sector in China reached 664.6 billion yuan ($104 billion) in 2020, with a growth rate of 15% year-on-year, according to iiMedia Research.

In May 2018, Didi launched its first food delivery service in Wuxi, but the efforts to duplicate the success of Uber Eats didn’t pay off.

It remains unknown whether Didi will expand Aoao Chifan service to other cities in China. Again, Didi’s new food delivery service will put it in direct competition with Meituan, which added a car-hailing function to its app in February 2017.

Douyin, Chinese version of Tik Tok, also completed testing on its new food delivery function In September.
