Apple has already begun work on the seventh-gen iPad mini. One of its new features is expected to be an improved ProMotion screen.

apple ipad mini 2021 review 24

The sixth-generation iPad mini went on sale as recently as 24 September, but rumours of its successor have already begun.

According to a new rumour reported by MacRumors, the seventh-gen iPad mini will feature a 120Hz ProMotion display, which should provide a more pleasing image and smoother animation than is possible with the current screen, which is limited to 60Hz.

ProMotion screens, which are currently offered on the iPad Pro range and the Pro handsets from the iPhone 13 generation, also offer the ability to adjust refresh rate depending on context. This means you can save battery power when doing tasks that don't require super-sharp animation.

If the information is correct, the move would hopefully overcome the widely reported 'jelly scrolling' problem that caused the screens of some iPad mini 6 tablets to wobble when scrolling slowly in portrait mode. (Apple said this behaviour was normal, so perhaps the company has no interest in 'solving' it.)

What other new features can we expect in the new iPad mini for 2022? That remains to be seen at this extremely early stage, but as ever we can expect Apple to invest in a more powerful processor chip.

Given that the seventh-gen iPad will be launched in autumn 2022 at the earliest, any and all rumours about its specs and design should be taken with a pinch of salt.
