Baidu partners with new energy vehicle maker GAC Aion to launch 5G-ready robotaxi

Chinese tech giant Baidu has partnered with GAC Aion, the wholly-owned NEV subsidiary of Chinese automaker GAC Group, to launch the Aion version of Baidu’s 5G-ready robotaxi Apollo Moon, which is based on GAC Aion’s electric vehicle and Baidu’s autonomous driving system Apollo.

Detail:

The GAC Aion version of Apollo Moon adapt count on Baidu’s intelligent driving system and GAC’s Aion car design and manufacturing expertise and EV modular platform.

Based on ANP-robotaxi architecture, the GAC Aion version of Apollo Moon is capable of self-driving under specific conditions and complex urban traffic scenarios.

Officially named Apollo Moon, the 5G-ready robotaxi was jointly released by Baidu and BAIC Group’s EV brand Arcfox in June. Back then, Baidu also announced a plan to deploy Apollo Moon in a ride-hailing fleet of 1,000 self-driving cars in three years.

Apollo Moon will equip with omni-sensors and computing unit redundancy functions as well as a precise failure detector and degradable processing algorithms, 5G remote driving service will also be supported, according to Baidu.

According to a press release from Baidu, the manufacturing cost of Apollo Moon per unit is only 480,000 yuan, which gives Baidu a big advantage to accelerate commercialization of its autonomous driving technology.

Baidu will open testing trail of Apollo Moon at Shougang park, which is one of the venues for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, starting from Thursday (October 28.

Context:

Apollo, an open platform of Baidu’s autonomous driving technology, first announced in 2013, it is a key growth driver of Baidu. The company said it has 2,900 patents for intelligent driving and 244 relevant road-testing licenses in China, accumulating more than 12 million km of test mileage.

Since launching Apollo, more than 100 industry partners have joined Apollo, including Chinese automakers FAW Group, Sokon and electric vehicle startup Nio, as well as international car companies including include BMW, Ford Motor Co, Volkswagen, Toyota, Honda, Daimler, as well as chipmakers Intel and Nvidia.

Spoke at Emerging Engineering International Forum 2021 earlier this week, Baidu’s co-founder and CEO Robin Li said his company will train 5 million artificial intelligence talents in the next 5 years, which will help Baidu to speed up innovation and development for its AI businesses.
