Juan Sanchez 等人在《The Planetary Science Journal》期刊上发表论文分析了小行星 1986 DA 的光谱，它是一颗罕见的富含金属的近地小行星。他们发现小行星表面有 85% 是金属，可能含有铁、镍、钴、铜、金和铂族金属，这些金属具有广泛的工业价值。他们估计，除金和铜之外的金属储存量将超过其在地球上的全球储量——部分甚至超出了一个数量级或更多。研究团队对小行星的经济价值进行了估算。如果在 50 年内开采并销售，1986 DA 上的贵金属每年将带来约 2330 亿美元的收入，总收入将达到 11.65 万亿美元。估算已经考虑到新供应大量涌入会对市场产生的通缩效应。将铁、镍和钴等金属拿回来可能没有意义，它们在地球上很常见，但是如果在地球轨道、月球和火星上建造基础设施的话，这些金属就可以派上用场了。
