I need to post my one year review of my M1 MacBook Pro. Still an excellent purchase a year later. In fact, I was planning on pulling the trigger on a Surface Laptop Studio, but decided it’s just not needed. Besides, I got a work assigned Dell for that. The M1’s battery life remains impressive, hasn’t gotten slow, and crushes anything I throw at it. I also feel like Chrome has finally met it’s match. 😄 As for what’s next, I am sure it will be a power house. But not looking at another Mac until probably the second generation larger screen iMac.

I'm guessing that MacRumors isn't a Costco member. This is the exact same deal that Costco had just a month ago, that's how I snagged the base model for a trip. Add in the executive discount, and I actually saved more....

Waiting for one that supports two monitors
I been using two monitors for a long time with a USB2DVI dongle.

Best Buy had this pricing like 2 weeks ago. Even then... because of the sale pricing, I was able to buy an "Open Box Excellent" for like $815 + tax... and get 0% on my Best Buy card.

No thanks, rather not have a crack prone Mac
Hoping they will fix that with the new mini-led panels.

I grabbed one for my wife when it was $750 a couple months ago at Best Buy with the extra $100 off from student deals. Wish I could've grabbed two at that price.

Although it could get away with a few word processor-related jobs, ‌MacBook Air‌ is typically for Internet browsing and not working.
Surely this needs changing in the M1 world?

I don’t think anything will beat the $740 price from Apple direct with the summer edu offer.

256 GB… what a joke. All of my projects range in the 14-20 GB storage, I would need many external drives just to work on a regular week.

And no, the cloud is not an option, just a back up for me. Try going out to the field and waiting for files to download at 2G or 3G speeds, or no internet at all.

The majority of people don't need more, so, this is not a joke.

I wish we had these deals in Europe, would be an instant buy.

Not everyone needs a lot of storage space. Personally, I'd rather have more than 8GB of RAM, but paying $350 more to do a BTO for a MBA with 16GB seems like such a rip off.

You sound like a power user who needs the extra storage. Most folk probably aren't experts like you so just need a regular amount of storage.

Then buy the 512 GB model Air. It is also on sale.

Or buy a Pro 13 and add storage.

Or wait until the 14 and 16" models come out and buy one of those.

Lots of options other than the base configuration Air listed in the article.

As someone who moved from the 16" MBP with 32 GB and 1 TB drive to the base Air, I can say I have no regrets and enjoy using the Air more than I did the 16" MBP.

Why don't they ever have deals on 1 TB model??

That is a pretty rare model. So likely they do not have a lot of them sitting in a warehouse.

Hopefully the next iteration will support two external monitors without requiring the use of a kludge like DisplayLink.

The technology is built into the OS and leveraged when the hardware is present. It's why it works seamlessly now and is a viable alternative for most folks.

You may not know it, but iCloud is really a good option. It auto uploads all your files in your Desktop and Documents folders to the cloud and leaves a good amount of free space in your computer without even you know it.

Using iCloud with a 256 GB Mac, you will always have 50 to 80 GB of free space in your computer, so even if you are in the middle of nowhere without a reliable internet connection, you will still have enough room for your project.

Once you come back to your office/home, some of the older files will be removed from your computer (with their icons still being usable to you), and you will get your 50 - 80 GB of free space back.

Also, I wonder why you are not considering using a cheap, fast external drive? All the people that I know who work in the field always use external storage regardless of their internal storage capacity.

Almost as if they're clearing stock to make space for a certain new laptop that'll hopefully have its event announced tomorrow

The joke would be on you if you bought a computer that didn't suit YOUR needs. YOUR needs doesn't mean EVERYONES needs.
