Steal Like An Artist by Austin Kleon

3 Things I Learn about Creativity and Life from This Book

Steal like an artist is a great book for designers and people who wanted to create something and make something, and I’m one of those who wanted to learn how to create something creative by stealing from others.

Every artist asked a question,

“Where do you get your ideas?”

the honest artist answers,

“I Steal them.”

In this article I’ll share my favorite lessons from the “Steal Like an Artist” book, I’m doing this to give you a snapshot look at the real treasure of knowledge inside this book. and It also helps me in summing up the learning from this book. so, let’s get started.

1. Nothing is Original

“There is nothing new under the sun” — Bible

What creative people understand is nothing comes from nowhere, all creative work or design-build on what comes before. and knowing this not makes us depressing but motivates us because we now don’t have the burden to create something from nowhere, we know that we have to put existed things together to make something new and creative.

2. Fake It until you make It

Austin says that you should be fake your work until you actually make it, personally, I think it’ll help in maintaining the Ego and stuff, but actually, it is actually much better, the author divided this into two ways to say this.

  1. Pretending to be something you’re not until you
  2. Pretending to be making somthing until you actually make somthing.

“You have to start doing the work you wanted to be doing” — Austin Kleon

be someone today you wanted to be tomorrow or make something today you wanted to be made tomorrow.

#3 Start Copying

We humans are not born by knowing who we actually wanted to become or to achieve. we learn about it by copying. Copying is good but the author is trying to level up your copying skills.

Austin wants us not to do plagiarism, but to learn how things work.

We learn things with practice. Copy until you get good at it.

Start Copying what you love. Copy Copy Copy Copy. At the end of the copy you will find yourself. — Y0hji Yamamoto

First, you have to figure out who to copy,

You have to find the person the mentor you wanted to be copied and then..

Second, you have to figure out what to copy,

you have to copy their work and art until you get to know their thinking behind the work of art. learning how they think is the actual thing we have to copy from them because it’ll give you a glimpse of their mind and how they think and what they really want.
