Google wants to use AI to time traffic lights more efficiently
Alphabet Inc’s Google cut fuel use and traffic delays by 10 per cent to 20 per cent at four locations in Israel by using artificial intelligence to optimise signal lights and it next plans to test the software in Rio de Janeiro, the company said on Wednesday.
Based on early results in Israel’s Haifa and Beer-Sheva, Rio de Janeiro’s municipal traffic authority expressed high hopes for the AI to better time traffic signal changes.
Aleksandar Stevanovic, an associate professor of civil and environmental engineering at University of Pittsburgh, said simulations show AI could smooth traffic flow.

Chinese hacker group APT41 targeting Indian citizens with phishing attacks, credential stealers
Security researchers have discovered a Chinese cyber espionage group, called APT41, who are targeting victims in India.
“The phishing lures and attachments also fit tactics that were previously used in infection vectors by APT41. These findings show that the APT41 group is still regularly conducting new campaigns, and that they will likely continue to do so in the future,” it added.
Further, the report noted that APT41 is a “Prolific Chinese state-sponsored cyberthreat group”, which has been involved in espionage and “Financially motivated criminal activity” since 2012.

Google confirms $1B investment into Africa, including subsea cable for faster internet
This will include landing a subsea cable into the continent to enable faster internet speeds, low-interest loans for small businesses, equity investments into African startups, skills training and more.
“We’ve made huge strides together over the past decade – but there’s more work to do to make the internet accessible, affordable and useful for every African. Today I’m excited to reaffirm our commitment to the continent through an investment of $1B over five years to support Africa’s digital transformation to cover a range of initiatives from improved connectivity to investment in startups,” said Google CEO, Sundar Pichai.
The subsea cable will cut across South Africa, Namibia, Nigeria and St Helena, connecting Africa and Europe.
