Douyin turns on teenager mode by default for users under 14
7 hours agoByteDance's video-sharing app Douyin announced today that it had completed an operation of putting all real name users under 14-year-old into teenager mode.
Details:
New registered teenager users will automatically be enrolled into the mode. In this mode, requested by the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) in 2018, there is a usage time limit for underage users, who can only scroll and stay on their screen in the app for 40 minutes.
More strictly, teen users can’t publish posts, watch live-streaming shows, send private messages or make comments. Douyin also monitors their content by a different set of algorithms, featured by teenager-friendly content related to art museum exhibits, science experiments, etc.
Context:
Douyin has been well-known for its widespread short video sharing and live-streaming features, especially under recommendation algorithms, a star invention of ByteDance.
PingWest reported that Douyin remained controversial in terms of the performance of realizing digital wellbeing, meaning the efforts of keeping users away from the app to curb smartphone addiction in the boom of short-form video apps in China.
According to a report released this year by App Annie, a mobile industry data aggregator, the average time a single user spent on Douyin has hit 80 minutes per day.
